how fast can an fj60 go? (1 Viewer)

I cruise at about 63-68 (55-60 indicated) on the way to work in mine every morning. When i am in a hurry I go between 70 and 75 (60-65 indicated). It feels fine at those speeds, but it is not a racecar, so i'd echo the rubber up in a ditch comment if i needed to swerve. On good 4 lane on a long road trip i go 75(65 indicated) It feels good there. Much over that and she starts shaking, so I don't push it unless i am passing.

I have had it on flat ground with the speedo showing 85 a few times attempting my own land speed record and it seemed to do ok, except for the fact that the engine was sittign at 4000rpm, and the driveline was shaking like a SOB. I think that equated to about 97MPH. I'd say that is the top speed.

But, It'll cruise at 70 all damn day long just fine. I get about 16MPG, and it is smooth as silk. Kinda nice at that speed. But (but one more time) I usually go 75 on the interstate since thats what traffic seems to move in the slow lane, and it still feels good. Gas mileage drops a bit though.

My truck (85 fj60) has 32" mudders on it and has 234,000 miles on the clock. Engine, tranny, suspension, and everything else except for the shocks (may have been replaced) is stock. Oh and it has some cheapie 2" shackles on it with worn bushings.

I was used to driving a 67 land rover before, so this is better.. keep in mind that it really depends on what you are used to. If you get out of a brand new tundra and step into an 85 LC, you may feel like you are going to die at anything above 65.

i've had mine up to 90 [marked by the GPS], but that was only one time and probably wouldn't suggest it for long periods.

i usually cruise at 65-70 to have reasonable MPG. it drastically decreases if i go faster than that on long trips, sometimes by as much as 1-3 MPG.

I have been driving our FJ60 on and off forthe past twenty years. it has never been my primary driver. It is easily among the slowest light vehicles on the road' right back there with aircooled VW buses. The 2F engine is also very thirsty. If most of you driving is to be on pavement, buy a Series 80 or someother vehicle. If you do plan on a lot of offroading and don't mind a slow, non-thrifty driver then the FJ60 is the vechile for you.

Hmmm...Just read the original post again. He asked how fast CAN it go. I'd say, damn scary fast-maybe 100 mph.:D

It sounds like someone (other than me) needs to measure terminal velocity of a 2F powered FJ60.

If you want to live and you want your cruiser to live as well, keep the speed and RPMs reasonable. For me, that's 65. I did do 75 sustained to Surf and Turf last year, but the fuel mileage really fell off and the 5 hour trip was still 5 hours.

Interesting - because a few weeks ago at Driver's Ed. for work, the teacher refrenced a Bay Area speed/time study with the same results 5hrs = 5hrs. In my old age I am slowing down and I am noticing the speedy guys that passed an hour ago - at the stop light 2 cars in front of me.

I'm still getting used to a 60 series that keeps speeding up when you push down with the right foot.

I need to change my gearing so it's more like the old VW camper - my wife would let me drink beer & I was happy because the spedo said 65 (even though 100% of other drivers going my direction pass in a flash). Bob

A lot faster than I care to go in it.

Depends how high it is when you drop it.

My stock '84 with 165 thousand has gotten up to 70. I have 29" tires. And it was pushing 3,000 rpm.

Is that normal guys?

i drive my '87 FJ60 every day, 23 miles one way, to work and keep the thing at about 55-62 (indicated with 33" BFG A/T's), which I think is around 65-70 mph.
it handles really well at that speed, although it feels a bit aloof and boaty in the turns. Let me know if I am going faster.

I drove next to my wife, and she said i was going 65 when my speedo said 55. At these speeds, it's usually between 2500-2800 rpms.

My wife drives the stock '82 to work once a week & comes back with stories about the BMWs, Carreras, & Cayennes she passes. She'll wring it out to 85.

they *CAN* go much faster than they *SHOULD* go.

A 60 isn't a great freeway vehicle. Unless you are comparing it to a 40. In which case they are amazing. :)

But they are capable of keeping up with normal freeway traffic in most situations.

True-I don't take my 40 above 60 mph. I would happily go faster, but I'm OK at 60. It's part of the Land Cruiser zen. That is what is so shocking about owning an 80 series. It is easy to cruise all day at 85 mph, and then still spank Golden Spike in Moab.

That is such a sensible answer.

Once i looked down after passing a truck. Ppeedo was reading over 140K's! And that was with 33's on too, no speedo correction either.:D

mine'll top 100 mph with plenty left, but I'm cheating :D (vortec, H-55, 33s)

with the 2F- keep it around 2300 and she's happy.
