What kind of driving you going to be doing? It depends on what size tires it has and if it has been upgraded to a 5 speed. To keep the rpms down 65-70mph sounds about right unless you go to some bigger tires.
Hi, If speed is a concern, perhaps you might look elsewhere? Highway speed of a mid-80's vehicle wasn't much of a consideration for Toyota when the US national limit was only 55 MPH. There's an awful lot to consider when pushing a 2F at 70, even with the axle ratios of an FJ60. Tire size, mileage on the vehicle, condition of drivetrain, etc. In the best of considerations, 70 (maybe more) iis viable for extended periods. Under the worst of conditions, 70 should be an afterthought in an emergency. What say you? LC
60s seem to have a happy cruise speed of 65mph, regardless of gearing and transmissions. I thought I would go faster with my H55f transmission, but instead I go the same speed at lower rpm. Once above 65, the FJ60 just feels unhappy, and above 75 is probably dangerous.
With my set-up, I go 2500 RPM down the highway, and I don't worry about how fast I'm going. Before the over drive, I went 3000rpm.
I will only drive my SOA Fj60 on 39.5s about 60mph. My HJ60 will go 70 all day on flat ground. My stock FJ62 would cruise at 75mph when stock, but only about 65 after lift, big tires, etc. It best not to push these trucks too hard, with aftermarket mods they can achieve dangerous speeds and the motors will last a long long time if they are not hot rodded. With that in mind on of Toyota's selling points of the first US FJ40s was that it would go 70mph. A feat that Jeep struggled with.
I've had my old 320,000 mile beater FJ60 at 90+. Not particularly spooky. Not at all actually. I wouldn't recommend it for sustained cruise however, due to the RPM that you're pushing (at least if you are talking about stock tires and gears).
I prefer to keep the cruise speed down around 65 with stock rigs for engine longevity if you are talking abut all day on the highway. I'll do 70-75 for shorter runs.
ours seem to be happy about 2000 rpm..........about 60% power, and I take what ever speed that setting gives; also these vehicles with a high center of gravity feel very squirrly/unsafe over 70 MPH......high center of gravity/no aerodynamics.....were not built to go fast just to work hard all day long; be carefull
Mark's observation is right on.......engine rebuilds are just darn expensive; am going through the process now and I try to baby mine.......keeping the rpms below 2500.......... yep an fj 60 with a 2f can do 90 MPH but I guess am chicken s**t just feels a bit nervous at that speed and have worries about having to swerve suddenly and the consequences;
the HJ 60's are a bit slower.... criusin at over 2500rpm is out of the question for me...so with 4 speed, i never go above 60mph.... but i guess the petrol engines are more suited for high speeds..
My stock '83 does 75 on the interstate with no problems. I've seen 95 in my '84 with the 5.7 Vortec on MTR 33s & it wasn't scary. Don't plan on seeing it again, though.
I grew up in Germany in the 80s with many Land Cruisers around.
With no speed limits on the Autobahn I've seen some pretty amazing things. Most of the vehicles were stock back then.
All gas FJ60s will do ca. 160kph = 100mph
My Dad had a - then brand new - BJ70 with a 3b diesel engine.
It topped out at ca. 140mph = 87.00 and he sold it because it was so slow and loud at that speed
I know for a fact that a stock 1978 Range Rover will do 180kph = 111mph, because I sat in it when my Dad drove the family down the Autobahn to Italy when we where going to the ferry to Africa.
We didn't think much about this, since you get used to the speeds and everybody drives that fast.
Every car dealer lists the top speed (next to fuel consumption!) of a vehicle in Germany, it is still a selling point for some people.
ive got the h55 and re built engine with probly somwheres in the ball park of 14k miles sence re built with 35"s and a 4" lift and stock gears (tell i save some$$$) with my behind me with a properly calobrated speedo mine cruses at 80 no prob, now if i had to stop real fast or make an eratic swerve i might end up rubber up on in a ditch or plantedinto one od the many redwoods that frame the 101 but...... that just means i need to do the runner break mod and build my self a cage...
