I've taken a liking to mountain biking and there is a nice network of mtb trails close by.

I have a 2 bike hitch rack that works well with my wife's 4Runner or my Tundra, but with a tire carrier on the back of my 80 series, the rack sticks out too far for my liking.

I've been forming some ideas in my head for a fork mount vertically on my fuel can carrier to keep the bike tucked close and high enough to not affect departure angle, but I'm not sold on loading it that's way each time, or if I'll beat up my forks.

This is the yakima hitch mount. It can't fold up so sticks out a couple feet and kinda bugs me, so I just load the bike in the back in the cargo area with the front wheel pulled.

As I plot out a rear seat delete platform, I've considered a fork mount on a slide, but the bike gets dirty, so that's always gonna add cleaning up Inside the cargo area.

I've looked at the tire carrier bike rack options and only saw one yakima product that uses the wheel bolt pattern as a mounting surface.

So I wonder, how are you guys carrying your bikes with a tire carrier?

Just a kuat 2 bike rack. I don't have the spare on in the pics but one bike fits with it on the carrier, 2 without.

I purchased a hitch extender that was long enough to allow my bike rack to clear the tire off the back of my 80. They aren't expensive.

North shore 4. I had a 1up prior which was great for 2 bikes. Not so great when I expanded it to 4 bikes. I’ve had the North shore for 6 years now, awesome rack for MTBs. I’ll admit I rarely use it on my cruiser as I rarely drive the 200 these days, and when I do it is towing the camper, and the rack goes on the camper.

Do you have a picture of your setup? I wanted to go the same route with vertically mounting the fork on my delta ladder but ultimately decided on a 1-up with custom mount. I Love it and it folds up and out of the way when not loaded but my best setup unfortunately is loading it inside the wife’s CRV. Cleanup is a not issue when you cover the floor and consider security when stopping for a cold one after a ride. Solid mount and fits up tight to the 13.5” spare with a ton of clearance and even hauls the fat bike tank in the winter. I have a picture somewhere of it folded up and I non bike haul but have to find it. They also fold down if you don’t have a swing out on the bumper. There are options for this to use the receiver hitch.

I see you have a major fork wheel bias (offset). that hasto be concerning, especially off road.

I'm in a similar situation but decided not to mount until I solve

It looks much worse in the picture than it actually is. It is about even with the mirror and why I shifted the excess to the passenger side. Good point though.

Old Yakama rack on the 40 we recently sold.

I have similar mount (name escapes me). how did you adjust the left/right offset?
The only L/R adjustment is in the 1-UP. If you look at the picture the passenger side is more vertical. This shifts the bike to the driver side. I wanted to keep it simple and was happy with the offset. Not a perfect solution but it works.

I have a 1up (the new HD) two place hitch rack on my 62 w/ the BTB hitch. Works great, easy to install.

The only thing I don't like about the 1up is it's definitely geared to Normal Mountain Bikes, and doesn't work as well if your bike has fenders, odd wheel size, etc. But it's basically awesome.

I 2nd a 1up tray rack for any bike carrying use.

I run a 1 1/4"base (with 2" adapter) which allows me a maximum of 3x bikes for use on the wife's hybrid and my van.

I will challenge you on this, that it does allow for use with heavy bikes, I've transported a long wheelbase, fendered, 22" radwagon on the rack ( SuperD) along with my wife's radrunner and our e-mtb.

There was a brief moment when I considered a northshore style hanging rack, but weight and length needs for our family ( and not shuttling yet) resolved this conflict.

We have the RockyMounts Guiderail and Velocirax 7. The Guiderail has been great and makes easy work... especially with ebikes. the Velocirax is a heavy mother, but will carry a lot of bikes.
