Hey guys I bought a new seal for my sunroof. I’ve been reading up and I read it’s a good idea to not remove the track if you don’t have to so you don’t have to realign it. Can I just remove the glass? Any tips on the seal installation? Thank you in advance.

Yes, the glass itself can be removed. When you look at the sunroof from inside the vehicle there are 4x plastic trim pieces around the sides of the glass. If you pull the side two off you will reveal 4 nuts. Remove these and the sunroof will lift right out. When you replace the seal I recommend also running some flowable sealant over the hard plastic pieces that interfaces between the glass and the rubber gasket. Myself and others have found water leaks past that.

IIRC, on my 80 at least there were shims at each bolt for proper alignment of the glass. Perhaps a good idea to mark or separate those during disassembly?
Also, with older plastic, you may want to be careful when removing the trim pieces, they may be quite brittle.
But I was astonished at how easy and fast it was to remove the glass TBH. Just don't drop it... :)

Be careful with those plastic trim pieces. The experience I had with mine is they had become very brittle and broke / shattered somewhat easily when removing them. They also can be a source of rattling as they can vibrate against the glass (that's actually the repair I was trying to make - not replacing the glass but attempting to keep those damn trim pieces from rattling).

No shims on the 100 thankfully for height adjustment. That is done with some torx bolts in from the sides. If you just pull the 4 nuts and lift the glass out, all height alignment will be preserved. You will need to make sure the glass is square in the opening before tightening the nuts back down when reinstalling, as there is intentionally some play in the mounting holes to allow for that adjustment.

I welcome your reviews after completing this repair. It is soon on my list!

if your leak is between glass and frame support of glass panel ,dry with tissue and compressed air and seal with a polysulphide or polyurethane sealer like sikaflex.
use little to keep the new seal on the glass edge.
it is rare for this seal to be the cause of leaks , it is usually the bonding between the glass and frame support.
run an old speedo cable down the drain tubes to ensure they are clear ,wipe everything clean and lubricate with silicon spray or apply silicon grease to slides and pivots.

when refitting glass ,the shims should leave the glass panel below the roof level at the front edge by a gnats whisker and above the roof edge at the back by the same to avoid wind noise.
