My truck is having the intermittent starter problems and I want to install the starter relay that I have been hearing about but I can't find a good write up on it. I have just spent the last hour and a half looking on the forum.

Can someone please give me a good write up on how to install the starter relay to get rid of my intermittent starts? Also, where can I purchase this at? Does it matter if I have an aftermarket remote start alarm installed?

Thanks!

Here is one I did with a wiring diagram if it helps.

Bill

It's on your left fender if you have one- - a wiring diagram is not needed-- I am not convinced it is your problem...
when it won't crank, will it crank with the remote starter.???
Describe your intermittant problems. A: trucks/cars crank and /or run-- start is only a relative term and shoud not be used for diag purposes

Have you had new brushes installed or a new starter?

When it won't crank, it happens with the remote start, also. This is my third starter. The last starter is only about 2 years old from Toyota. I followed roncruiser's long post and I have pretty much done the same thing he did. I changed the fusible link, neutral safety switch, cleaned posts, checked the battery, etc. One day it stayed in the cranking mode for like 30 seconds. It seemed that the starter relay was the cure. Any suggestions?

If it is stuck cranking you need to replace the contacts or get a reman starter. You really should do that before adding the relay anyway. The relay is a just a band aid for a degraded ignition switch circuit. If you have a light click, but it doesn't turn over then the relay might help since there is not enough power getting to the starter solenoid

So, you think I should change the starter before I change the ignition switch?

You replaced the starter 2 times already sense you had the truck?

what kind of remote start- po installed? you??

It is a Viper alarm system. No, I had it installed about 5 - 6 years ago by an auto alarm shop.

Since I had the truck, I replaced myself once then it was in the shop one time and I had Toyota replace it while it was in the shop.

If the starter consistently turns over you can rule out the ignition switch/NSS circuit problem. What symptoms are you having exactly?
My symptoms are some times when we go to start, we get nothing. Sometimes it will begin to turn once and stop. This doesn't happen every time, just sometimes, but it is too often for me and especially the wifey since it is her DD and she usually has the kids with her.

what makes you sure it's not the usual starter contacts issue?

I'd also suspect the aftermarket alarm because they have a starter interrupt relay that can fail.

Next time this occurs roll down the drivers window and carefully listen to the starter.

A single click when cranking is usually the starter contax. How many miles since you put the Toyota reman starter in?

Multiple clicks when cranking is usually a weak battery.

No click (from the starter) when cranking is often the ignition switch or neutral safety switch. Or faulty alarm starter interrupt relay.

Try shifting to neutral and re-try it.

Starter interrupt relay may be suspect - should be two wires going to each side of your starter wire under dash- Put your starter wire back together like oem. Is there a momentary push button override on the kick??
If so press while key is @ crank when the truck f's up on you
I do these return to oem fixes countless times a year
mostly in shopping center parkinglots!!!
you need to eliminate this scenario - OR if you can duplicate enough and check for +12 @ the small starter lug while this is happening you will have your answer...

maybe about 10 - 15 K mile ago,

no there isn't

maybe I will go by an alarm shop and see if they can re-wire to cancel out the remote start. I'm scared I may screw something up.

when I look under my dash there is also a clear box that looks like a clear relay or something, just bigger and it has a red blinking light inside. My starter seems to have spliced wires coming from it. Is it just as simple as unconnecting all those wires and re-connecting to oem. How can I tell what is oem?

The box you speak of is an impact/glass break sensor- from DEI - for your alarm- unrelated to your problem - however- your alarm i believe most possibly could be- Any local shop can eliminate the starter interrupt side- Which is useless anyway....From your posts i have deduced that you are not ready for this task... they won't charge you much or you could drive to NY and I won't charge you at all
Find your button yet?????

I believe I can do it. I can follow directions really well. I changed my starter, egr valve, modulator, etc. without any problems. Can you or anyone tell me how to disconnect the starter interrupt?
