Trying to get a 3 spd column shifter apart at the gear box. Took the set screw out that holds the shifter and also the lower clamp bolt.

Everything is loose on the firewall, what am I missing??

Thanks, Matt

I don't remember exactly what I did, but I know you need to keep that clamp around the steering column so don't lose that bolt. I also know that I didn't break/cut/destroy anything when I took mine out, so it's possible. Did you completely disassemble the upper part of the shifter linkage (at the steering wheel)? It seems like it was a bit of a hassle, but it eventually pulled out of the clamp bracket.

Good luck,
eric

I have no plans on using this again, but I would prefer not to cut it up. Obviously it went together at the factory, so it must come apart somehow.

It looks to me like it should come apart at the gear box, hence the need for that clamp and set screw?

Thanks, Matt

I've done this all before without breaking anything. IIRC, you have to pull the stuff off the bottom, (rubber cap, bracket) and take off the turn signal switch at the top, then loosen "P", and slide it off of that. Then it removes by pulling up into the cab. Then send it all to me. :D

If you have the column shifter disconnected and the bracket than it should pull out. I had to use a wedge to get the thing out. used a 4x4 at the bottom and pounded the chit out of it while a buddy pulled up on the steering wheel and twisted the bar. It took a while and some muscle but entually got it out. Good luck. It is not going to just pull out you are most likly going to have to make it come out with a BFH. Good Luck...

Removing Steering box

I just pulled mine out, refurbished it and put it all back together. See my web site here: http://tinyurl.com/4ehfr
Bottom line: Once steering wheel and turn signal bracket and housing are removed, column clamps are removed, rubber boot clamps removed, and pitman arm is off then unbolt box and slide it and the column in one piece out of the wheel well. The steering shaft DOES NOT separate at the box! It is all one long piece. Once out remove the clamp at the box and you can remove the column to expose the steering shaft.

Sorry but I forgot to mention I never had the column shifter. You will need to remove all the shifter stuff also.
