My 2015 has 205k and has been great for last 115k of ownership. Last week my AC started not working in traffic. I stopped by the shop and he was like, it’s probably the fan. I make an appointment to get it fixed next Friday. I drove home. I try to start it up a few hours later. I get a clunk. My thoughts:
“Is the batt dead? I’ll try again click click click (like batt is dead). Phew, for a minute there, I thought the engine seized. I’m about to connect the charger when I decide to check with my scanner tool what charge is etc. (no check engine, no overheating) I try one more time. Starts right up. Yeah! Then the smell. Then the smoke. You know the one, billowing white and sweet smell. Coolant!!! 🤬🤬🤬

Sorry to hear that. Really strange to have the AC issue and the not start at the same time. I don't know how those would be related.

Yeah, the other day I had a CEL, but I couldn't find my scan tool. By the time the new one arrived it had turned itself off. Never indicated that it was overheating, but there's a Pending Code of "misfire in cylinder 7" according to Car Care Nut 2015 it's always 5 or 7 that go.

He was claiming in his latest video that somehow this was isolated to 10-13 models because replacement head gasket were different 🤦

Still a rare issue in the realm of potential issues but that doesn’t help you in your current situation

That sucks, my condolences to your finances.

Thanks. It happened on the same day I got a new job, though, so it's hard to be too mad. And I miss my LX anyway. A bricked 2015 GX460 has to be worth something!
You gonna part it out?

Depending upon what it'll cost you to pull the heads, here's an option:
Or this, but I'm not sure how plug-n-play an LS640 goes into a GX:

It's difficult to make a claim on how rare or common these failures actually are. Root cause of failures? Even more so.

The 200 series certainly has had a fair amount of failures reported.

It's unfortunate, something isn't quite right with the UR engines in these platforms.

I’m just basing on 8 years of daily watching reports on FB groups and all forums with GX content. It has been rarely reported on the 1UR-FEs in the 460s anyway.

Abundant content for coolant valley leaks, water pumps, timing cover weep/seep/leaks, and radiator failures..

Cam tower leaks aren’t as rare as head gasket but from an owner report perspective not commonly reported. I do see far more cam tower leak reports on 3UR-FEs.

Likely scenario Aux fan or fan clutch likely failed (AC wasn’t working at idle) and the temp sensor failed too and it overheated. It threw a code the other week. It went away so I continued to drive. No stored code (but I have a cheap scanner). Pending code was misfire on #7. FB marketplace is going out of the woodwork to buy it. So I’m gonna scoop up this 99 LX470 and call it a win. lol.

I hear you. I couldn’t bear to do it anyway. You’re welcome, GX community! ;)
