My 60 has been sitting out on the street for the better part of a month after I purchased a daily driver (once gas hit $4). It's been hot and I haven't moved it as much as I should've. Was running fine up to now. Went to move it and of course the battery was dead. After I jumped it, it ran fine for a few minutes while unhooking cables, and just as I was about to close the hood it started making this God-awful racket! I cut it off and thought it may have been bad gas or some prob w/ the carb. This sound appears to be upper part and is metallic knocking-sounding...loud though. Nothing smoking and nothing unusual out of the tailpipe. When I ease on the gas the noise speeds up. Had it towed to my Davis Toyota dealer for inspection. Valves? It was low on oil, but not bone dry. Awaiting the (probably) bad news :bang:

Any thoughts on this?

Dropped valve or exhaust leak if you're lucky, rod bearing if you arn't. How low on oil? Do you have good oil pressure? Miles on motor?

Make sure it isn't something that's just loose or disconnected.

Fingers crossed for you.

this may sound weird

...but...what the heck...I'll throw it out there anyway. Did it almost sound like tennis balls knocking around under the hood? I had a sound like that at one point...and it magically went away. I have the special Toyota option of the self-healing cruiser. ok, not really.

here was my theory - never proven or tested. I let my 60 sit for a few months and when I started driving it again, I'd hear that sound. then, it went away. I figured the belts were old, and developed a little 'bump' where it sat on the pulley, and had some memory to it. when accelerating, I couldn't hear it. when at idle, I'd hear it, kinda scary...open the hood...nothin' looked wrong.

again, no proof or anything...but maybe it's as simple as that.

Broken motor mount. Fan hitting the shroud.

Hard to tell from your description but you sure it is not any of the belt driven pumps? Could of bent a pushrod. Who knows. Just wait and let us know what they say. Hopefully it is not something major.

A CAT!!!!! I started mine once, cat was napping there, Jeeez I thought the engine was going to fall out.....until the mostly scalped cat went running off!!

x2 on furry 4 legged, or belts, or things belts attach to.

Your lifters have drained. It will take a few minutes for them to fill with oil and then the ticking will "magically" go away. Just make sure that the oil level is correct and start it up, let it run for a few minutes (watch the oil pressure and temperature gauges to make sure everything is copasetic), the ticking will fade and then disappear altogether.

Of course I could be wrong and then... BOOM!!!:flipoff2:

I think you are referring to hydrolic lifters. The 2F is not quite as "sophisticated" - direct connection from cam to push-rods to rockers to valves.

X3 on the fried feline. Happened to me with a rental car...
Made a horrid racket until I finally realized there was really something wrong.

Huh, I guess I got lucky then. When I received my cruiser it had been sitting for at least a month. I started it up and it made the ticking noise of a bad valve, really bad! Considering that a used f2 is pretty cheap, I checked the oil and guages and then I just let it run while I inspected the vehicle. By the time I was done looking her over the ticking had stopped (ten to twenty minutes of run time.) I've neer had a problem since so I figured the lifters had drained and just needed to pump-up; thus my suggestion on this thread. Sorry to pass on bad advice.

No worries.

I had that happen! It was at Snowbird ski resort years ago. We had some MEAN ferral cats up there that would kill you as soon as look at you. One was warming himself on the motor of our Chevy truck when we went to move it to a safe location for the night, out of the avalanche path. One less cat at the ski resort.

Thanks guys. I emailed Gary at Mudrak and Cruiser Drew. I'll post some more symptoms when I hear back!

"I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE" So thanks to Jeff in Davis for checking my 60 out while it was sitting at Davis dealer. Awful noise just up and quit after looking for source. I was all ready to swap out a motor too! Drove it all weekend and it's running fine now. They think it was some carbon build-up, but someone posted something about lifters filling up after 20min of idle...maybe that was it? No sign of a dead (or dying) cat though. Running rest of tank with some de-carbonization gas treatment. Anything else sound good for prevention (other than running it)? Any follow up needed?

Hmmm...was 100% ready to drop 2K+ on a swap, so now it's like playing with the house' money! I feel like I got $$$ burning a hole in my pocket!! OME!!!! Paint!!! Plasma!!!!

Told ya, same thing happened to me...
