Seriously. Thoughts? The horn hasn't worked ever in the last year since I've owned my 62, and then the other day I'm walking out from the store and a 20lb pug is standing with its front paws on the wheel and the darn thing is just blaring away. First time I ever heard it :)
 
check the contacts and clean them? Funny story, good visual. :)
 
Good threads here on replacing the ring and pin. Best advice is to leave the nuts loose BUT ON when pulling the steering wheel. Otherwise it smacks you in the nose once you finally get it off!! Easy job.
 
I think if you rotate your steering wheel while depressing the horn you will find that is will honk when the steering wheel is rotated to specific position(s). This indicates that the pin or ring is worn, as stated above.

Quick fix: let the pug steer while you work the pedals...
 
Or . . . never honk and just drive through the problem in your land crusher

My horn quit a year ago. My finger works fine!

another w/da finger. my horn worked 8 yrs ago, then again about 4 yrs ago, and I haven't even thought to check the spare rig...

my dobers would drive if i'd let 'em!
 
I need to repace mine for about the fourth time. It's the pin that dies a premature death. I had some semi-redneck Toyota parts guys swear that a .22 casing and the spring form a ballpoint pen was the way to go on that pin.

Ditto on the nose bleed thing. I use a puller, since I have the $5.00 Harbor freight thing. It's worth it.
 
you can remove the whell and then remove your horn contact ring. there are three screws that hold the ring to the wheel. place a small brass washer behind the ring at each screw hole. Insert the screws, replace the wheel, honk to your hearts content. the pin wears off on the end, but the washers will make up for this wear.

100% correct. This is exctly what I did to solve the problem too.
 
When it goes back together you gotta use slip-ring grease or it'll wear prematurely......................... :beer:

No screws on the 62 but simply sliding the washers under the clips does the job - thanks. Been meaning to do this fix for a long time.
 
I only ever heard my horn honk once, and that was when I was pushing as hard as I could on a screwdriver to take the blasted cover off. (Because the screws were stripping) What a handy thread!

You can make the pin from brass welding rods.

Thanks for the redneck fix, it did the job! My 62's horn hasn't worked with the wheel straight for years, and that's made getting it to pass inspections a chore.

My version of the redneck fix was a little different. I left the existing spring and worn pin in place and simply ogged out the end of the .22 shell so it would slip over the top of it. 5 minute fix.
