It's official, I'm f***in stupid beyond all recognition. i hooked up the battery backwards and the two fusible links smoked up immediately.

How much damage have I inflicted and what do I need to replace?!:bang:

You need to replace the fusible link. It should have protected everything else thats its job.

There were to other wires not protected by the fusible link. A big thick wire covered in black rubber and a eighth inch thick wire covered in white rubber. What do these two wires hook up to?

Agreed. Put in new links, give it a try, report back if it does not work. Should work fine.

The first one is the starter, I think. Guessing fine. I do not remember what the small wire on a 62 is for. Is the truck mostly stock electrically?

I am glad there are fusible links there. I will replace and report. Thank you for the quick replies, I love this community and the knowledge and experience everyone offers. I already feel a little better.

The wiring is 90% stock. There is one after market radio wire but it wasn't connected when I messed up.

The big thick black one is the + lead to the starter, the small white one probably is the alt hot lead but I believe that is post fusible link.

Since it was immediately apparent, I think you are probably going to be okay. Anything that is switched should be fine since, until the circuit is closed, it doesn't know or care the direction of the current.

I would be concerned about any unprotected modules or things like the emissions control unit. Hopefully, those were protected by the fusible links and/or fuses.

The starter I'm gonna say should be okay. The alt is a 50/50, IMHO. It's diodes do not appreciate much current 'backfeed'. You'll know as soon as it's running again. I'm gonna send some Cruiser Karma your way, bro. No worries.

I know of the two fusible links up near the battery. Any others hiding that I didn't notice before I order new ones?

Before I blew my fusible links I was fixing the wiring. Now that I need to redo it I'd like it to be as reliable and professional as possible. Are there any good kits to buy for general car wiring? What do the pros use? Heat shrink etc? I'm looking for a good wiring kit for around $100 or less.

Status Update: I replaced the fusible link and everything looks ok except...

My reverse lights do not work. I checked the physical bulbs and they are fine. I checked the fuse panel to the left of the steering wheel and all is good there. Am I missing any main fuses or switches or relays that may cause my reverse lights to not work???

Thanks, randy.

The reverse light switch on the tranny?

On the 62 it is actually called the neutral start switch. i am not for sure but i think it is on the drivers side.... anyway when you but the auto in reverse that switch s suppose to activate the backup lights.

I'll do a search. If anyone else has any ideas or more detaisl on this switch please chime in.

Phew you're lucky it didn't get your diodes! Not that they would be to much of a pain to replace though,if your handy at taking apart an alternator. At least chebby ones aren't too bad. As for the reverse lights like already said check the switch..Maybe somebody can chime in on this thought. Is there maybe a breaker switch that may have tripped? My buddy's 4 runner has one but I've never really had any eletrical problems with my cruiser.

I have not found info on where this switch is yet. I hate not having the A440F FSM. How long will my battery last if my alternator is not charging it? I am not sure that the alternator is good yet. I haven't driven it more than 40 mins total since replacing the fusible links.
