what is this hook next to the brake booster for?

I've wondered that myself and assumed it was to aid install at the assembly plant. This part doesn't seem particularly heavy but when you are manipulating them all day long into the somewhat awkward location I could imagine toyota feeling a hoist was necessary.
 
maybe its the lift point when removing the engine....:D

yeah I tucked my compressor control plug between it and the reservoir...and was wondering why it was there.

Imo, and you know about "o's", is that it's not thick enough for an engine lift point.
 
I've had the unit out. Nothing more than a nice grab handle at the center of gravity. Probably to aid in assembly as others suggested.

The component has lots of fittings and interfaces at the bottom section so not great to cradle from.
