A buddy of mine who used to have a 60 was telling me about a conversion kit that he had heard of for replacing the spring/hinge assemblies on 60 sieres hoods with a more simple hinge and high pressure piston that'd suppor the weight of the hood. I've looked around and found nothing with any of the popular Cruiser outfitters. Has anyone heard of this, or maybe some booty-fab way to do it? I really like the idea of pistons instead of the springs for my hood. No real reason, just another way to be unique :D

I've seen this done on a couple of 60's using the 80 series setup and custom adapters for the shock mounts. The two hoods should have similar weights. You can also buy shocks from McMaster-Carr's, that what I did for my trailer lid.

I've meant to look into this several times, so I can eliminate the the hood brace (which has lost the rubber cover for the hook, the rubber grommet that keeps it in place and plastic clip that holds it horizontally)....

I used an extra set of rear liftgate shocks on my FJ62. They work great. Brackets can be made or bought at most auto parts stores.

Hey Gary, you got any pics of your setup that you can post? Do they hold the hood up on their own or do you still have to use the brace in the front? Part numers, measurements for where to secure everything?

Wow, damn I like that. I wonder if it uses holes that're already there for securing the shock mounts to. I'm surprised the lift gate shocks can hold the weight of the hood. That airbox is freakin nice too. I wonder if you can do up something like that for a 3FE's intake that'd work with a snorkel.

Edit: I wonder if the Reid shocks that we use for our lift gates would work well too. Perhaps the 120lb shocks instead of the 90lb that are used for lift gates (which reminds me, I've gotta replace my lift gate shocks bad)?
