Hood louvered 80

I actually found a guy near me that has the punch/die for it. I am definitely doing it on the 80. The advantage to doing it on the 80 is that someone already spent the time to find out the low pressure areas around the hood to optimize the heat escape. Now luckily on my 60 I have zero cooling issues. No matter how hot it is outside or how slow I am driving, no overheat. But doesn't mean i don't want the cool factor.

I am not clear on whether the louvers make a functional difference, but no question, they look cool!

That is bad A$$. Someone needs to try this on a 60. Also I want those rims. they are sick.

Digger put Race Ace louvers in his hood and I copied him. Gary "Waggoner5" did a similar thing on his "merc-cruiser".

This is my version of hood louvers/blackout. They are aluminum and come from a company called Race Ace.

My truck is dirty.....as usual!!!

Local guy here in Ventura has 3" dies in a press. He prefers to quote the job rather than price each louver, so he'll need to see what you have and want done. The wool tuft test is easy to do. Buy a small skeine of yarn and a roll of tape. I'm thinking to do some in the hood to aftercool my turbo diesel ribbit DD.

it's more of a cool factor for me than a heating/cooling issue, but I can't help it, I have some cruiser-envy and want those louvers too. :grinpimp:
you guys have those punch referrals? :D may I suggest, if there are a number of guys that want this done on their rigs (60 and 80 series), maybe we can get a group order on the louvers...just a thought.

Re: Group buy; Not sure how that would work, but I'm sub'd to the thread and will supply a phone number to any who PM for it.

Those on the 62 above look like they could be the late 80's Z-28 fender louvers. (paintjob: sigh, Camaro folks......)

I got heating up issues...under the hood..
PM'd yah...!!

Not to cost my friend any work, but louvers are a last ditch effort if you're looking to fix an over-heating issue. That nice low pressure zone in the middle of the hood is great for pulling out hot air, only to present it to the vent opening at the base of the windshield.

If the fan is working properly it will be way more effective at controlling temperature. Somewhere on this sub-forum this a pic of a fiberglass fan shroud. Looked fairly easy to make and I'm considering it for my own V8 swap.

could you do it to a painted hood? or would it crack the paint during the process?

Typically the paint cracks right at the corners of the opening, and sometimes lifts off at other places along the shear-line. I would venture that you will need to at least feather and spot-in that area around the louvers. If you're thinking to do a flat painted panel like Dynosoar's I'd do the louvers in that area and before the painting.
I can tell you that sanding around louvers sucks, do it before the louvering.
