So my little P.O.S. DD has started to develop a little problem and i wanted to see if anyone here might be able to help.

About a month after i bought my honda crx it did this symptom once and has done it 3 times in the last week.

Sometime when i got to start it and wont start, turns over great and the battery acts very strong, starter cranks great....it acts like its fuel starved.

The closest thing i can think of is vapor lock because it only does it during the day and if i let it sit for 5 minutes after shutting off it starts fine.

BTW, it has a new dist and wires, plugs look decent.

Any ideas?

It could be your Main relay(but black thing in the fuse box) or your fuel pump.... Also when restarting you car after driving it and stopping at like a 7/11 for a soda or something make sure your fuel system presurizes before turning the key to the start postion, wait for the check engine light to turn off before your turn the key to the start position..

check for fuel pressure.

in the truck and 4 runner section there is a thread that discusses possible reasons, and later, it is solved. was a faulty fuel pump/check valve after all.

also results may vary depepnding on carb/ injected

Contacts as well... Sounds stupid but I've delt with it in a Honda, would work fine then not, fine then not... I think the main thing to do when trouble shooting is to rule things out... As such, next time it happens try some carb cleaner in the intake and see if it starts off that, if so you know to trouble shoot the fuel system... If that still doesn't fix the issue then make sure you're getting spark and so on...

Do you get any black smoke out of the tail pipe on re-start?

You might have an injector that leaks down. It floods that cylinder and depressurizes the rest of the cylinders.

i'd go with a relay and fuel pump first. Does the pump whine when you turn the key to on?

Guys,

thanks for the help. I will go check some of these things right now. I dont notice any black smoke once it does start up again and fwiw the crx is a 1990 and fuel injected....

Ok,

Little update. they honda was down for one day as i had to fix a tire with a slow leak. Drove it around alot this morning.

It did the same thing several times but i noticed that when turn the key and waiting for the check engine light to shut off, it usually start without a problem. Two or three times though i have turned the key and the check engine light wont go off, and i dont here the pump....no surprise, it wont start.

It's sounding more and more like the pump, which is about $100 bucks, now i just have to hope i dont need to drop the tank to ge to it.

You don't. There's an access panel in the back because the Japanese have figured out it might need to be replaced from time to time.

Be sure to check for power and ground at the pump when it's not starting. That will tell you for sure that it's the pump and not the relay, the ECM or the connections.

Gumby,

thanks for the help. I've been doing some reading on some honda sight and found out that the main relay is a notorious problem on them. Most owners move the relay so it super easy to get to and keep a backup in the glove box. I have a replacement one coming that i will swap out first and see if it solves the problem. It was the cheapest thing to start with, $20.

thanks for the info on the pump access. I'll post up on whether the relay fixes it.

Yeah the relay is usually the problem. There are extensive posts on the Net about resoldering them. Just replace it with a good one. I have had the same problem with my Civic.
