I was wondering, is the CEL supposed to display when you turn the key to the selection before staring your engine.

You know, all the dash lights seem to go on for a second...and most cars I have had will display every single light before you start the car.

Is the 80's CEL supposed to come on like that?

I've never had any major mechnical problems, but want to make sure my bulb is still functional.

yes it should along with the rest.

FYI: pulling the bulb by PO has happened on occation prior to sale. The CEL is foe emission system failures and doesn't always mean the truck would exhibit obvious problems. The egr system is one of those.

Heres my lights I get before start up with the driver's door open and the E-brake up...

LandTank is probably right (or it could have burned out). I was tempted to do this on mine after six months of trying to get rid of PO420 code before replacing O2 sensors. You can always go to an Autozone (if you have one nearby) and they can plug their code reader in for free and see if it is throwing a code.

If it turns out to be the O2 sensors, make sure you use the exact factory replacement- I went through hell with two different kinds of aftermarket ones before the actual Toyota ones fixed the problem.

Hope this helps!

The CDL light only comes on when I put it in LOW gear, but I never had it come on when I started the car (unless I was in low already..)

Do these lights come on with other 80s when you are turning the key to accessories mode before starting it?

I will have to search for the "D" light fix to see how to pull the panel to check and replace bulbs so I'll check on those as well.

In a '94 turning the key will light up the brake, CEL, ABS, volt, seat belt and door (these last two I'm not sure about). If the ECT button is on, the PWR will light up. If the center diff is locked, it will light up. If O/D is on, it will light up. My truck isn't locked so I can only assume that those indicator lights will behave like the center diff indicator.

Your results may vary.

Can anyone confirm if I'm supposed to have a Check Engine light display before start up on a 97 LX450?

There is also low engine oil warning light and ATF oil temp warning light on a '93.

I knew I forgot some

Ok, see that is strange...

I know for sure I have the Low Oil light, because I had that come on like a week ago when I was a little low after a long drive through the mountains. I topped her off and the light was gone.

I don't remember ever seeing the airbag light, so I guess I'm going to have to pull the guages and replace some bulbs and report back.

Are these bulbs available at regular auto parts stores?

Well crap...

I just pulled my guages out. If I am counting correctly according to the owner's manual:

IMG_0199.jpg

(counting from right to left)

1 (gray) is the Airbag light
2 - ABS
3 - A/T Oil Temp
4 - CDL
5 - NO BULB (this is blank space in owners manual, so makes sense)
6 - Check Engine - (Bulb holder, but NO bulb present - I LOVE IT!)
7 - Seat Belt Warning
8 - Cruise Control
9 - High Beams

I swapped the ABS and the Engine Light bulbs to check, sure enough - CEL is on.

Well, off to Autozone to run a scan and buy replacement bulbs.
(crosses fingers)

Well, went to Autozone with the dash half apart and got the code ran...

It came back "P1700"

We went into the store to check that on the computer and it was "Indeterminate - Transmission Failed to Neutral"

I pulled the negative for 1 minute and started it up - no CEL anymore.

I assume that means at some point the transmission didn't go into neutral properly?

Well its what came up for Autozone's little reader deal... I have no idea if that crosses to anything.

I looked it up and found this:

P1700 Transmission Indeterminate Failure (Failed to Neutral)

Well I figured it out for you, you might not like this.

P1700 is actually a AT code. from page AT-32

Speed Sensor No 2 circuit malfunction

It would seem that the PO unplugged the speed sensor to not record mileage and pulled the bulb as well to hide the light.

Not the most honest thing to do.

Thanks - does that mean it was plugged back in, if the code is now gone after the battery reset?
