Yes, everything works on the dash now, was only missing the CEL light until today..

Would me detaching the cables behind the guages today to check the bulbs cause that CEL to come on?

I ran a carfax when I was buying the LX from a dealership and everything checked out on the report.

Well crap...

I just pulled my guages out. If I am counting correctly according to the owner's manual:

IMG_0199.jpg

(counting from right to left)

1 (gray) is the Airbag light
2 - ABS
3 - A/T Oil Temp
4 - CDL
5 - NO BULB (this is blank space in owners manual, so makes sense)
6 - Check Engine - (Bulb holder, but NO bulb present - I LOVE IT!)
7 - Seat Belt Warning
8 - Cruise Control
9 - High Beams

to make this a complete list including here is the stuff on the other side

from left to right as viewed in the driving position the bulbs are

air bag,
ABS,
AT/Oil temp,
CDL,
blank,
check engine,
seatbelt,
cruise,
high beam,

space

brake,
low oil,
A/TP (tecase neutral wile trans in park)
blank,
front locker,
rear locker,
air filter clogged (not lamped in the US),
door open

The MIL bulb didn't jump out of that holder by itself. The carfax wouldn't detect a dishonest PO that pulled the odometer cable & the bulb, took a cross-country trip or two and plugged it back in before trading it. Seems he forgot to clear the MIL though.

Maybe it's just a conspiracy theory... can't think of another reason for the missing bulb though. A smart fella would have intentionally burned out the CEL (MIL) bulb and replaced it to cover his tracks. Your PO wasn't so bright.

I've noticed that there has been a silent explosion in the numbers and types of automotive replacement LEDs.

Are there LED replacement bulbs available to fit these yet?

Ok, after a short drive today the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came back on.

I went back to Autozone, same deal - P1700.

Now, since this is a speed sensor malfunction - would that happen after I install the 35" tires? My speedometer works, (although its not correct speed anymore), and my odometer, etc...

Could it just be a bad speed sensor itself? Is there something else besides the negative disconnect type ECU reset to delete that code?

You'll have to use the FSM troubleshooting guide and fix the problem. Could be a bad sensor or a wiring problem. Check the connections and the harness.

Dug in some more and the sensor in question is mounted to the transmission and not the t-case, that one is speed sensor #1.

Speed sensor #2 is used for controlling shifts and lockup of the torque converter and if it failes the ECU then uses #1.

It's mounted on the rear of the tranny on the drivers side near the top according to the diagram.

If you arte going to persue this repair yourself you should probably get a FSM as the testing of this circuit gets involved.
