Hi folks,

So I have a 88 HJ75 Troopie which I’m importing to Belgium. Its just been technically inspected and failed on, 1 rear leaf being broken on each side !! yes it was driven up from South Africa. My local Toyota garage quoted over €2000 for a replacement !! You read that right and Old Man Emu retail for around €380 each here in Europe.

So my question is, if I remove the broken leaf on each side, will this have adverse effects of the handling, safety and carry weight of the car. It has 7 leafs and it’s the 3rd from the bottom that’s broken.. Its been converted to a camper and had water / fuel tanks so I guess I need to remember the extra weight. I don’t plan on heavy off roading.. just touring.

Cheers
Matt

depends on which leaf it is ...
bottom leaf? very little change at all
main leaf? lucky you got home.
one of the center leafs? then it will depend on which leaf.

Its the second from bottom... found a local company who rebuild leaf springs, fingers crossed...

might even have them add a leaf to help with the additional weight.

thanks Matt

Now the fun starts;

Having measured my springs, I need replacement bushes with follow dia; inner 19mm Outer 40mm length 40mm shoulder 7mm

Any ideas as I've looked on various websites and the HJ75 troop carrier should only have a outer dia 35mm bush... explains why I have a set of un-used with the car...

Cheers
Matt

Cannot help you in regard to the bushings, sorry
If I may advise on the springs...
Get the other leafs inspected as well. Good chance they are damaged as well.
During an long distance trip in Kazakhstan one of the groupmembers, driving a 70 series with Dobinsons, damaged (broke) leafs on both sides in the middle of nowhere.
Started with one leaf (about in the middle of the package) at the right hand side of his rear axle and shortly (couple of 100kms?) thereafter the leaf on top of that one. We managed to fix it temporarely and put some of his belongings in other rigs so he could travel with less weight although he was on his own and didn't carry a lot of stuff.
About 150 kms further down the track he could hear another leaf snap. This time it was the same leaf as the first one but obviously on the left hand side. Shortly thereafter....the leaf on top of it broke. As we had no means to fix this second one it we had to wedge a block of wood in between the frame and the axle.
We found help in a small village about 80 kms further down the track. Took us about 5 hours to get there because he had to maintain a very low speed having a "fixed" rear axle.
With the help of the local blacksmith we put 'new' leafs on. These were taken from an old farm-trailer and cut to size (length) with a handsaw.
With these blades he made it all the way home, about 5000 kms.

Thanks Ron for the sound advise. last night I dismantled one of the springs, to find another leaf broken....

I'm now looking for any / various springs which are 7mm thick and 70mm wide.... I think they are the same size on a HJ60

cheers Matt
