Thanks Cult
Very happy with the 12HT as haven't had to touch anything except oil and filter servicing every 5000 K.

I do love this old truck cult being number 478 in the 70 series production run making the old girl a keeper.
The engine and transmission and many other updates are all period 1985 landcruiser parts from varies models I sourced from all over the country. The overdrive is also period for the 1985 model landcruiser so she may be a basket case but it's all 1985 cruiser. :)

Top project. Did the gearbox rebuild cure the screaming?

Rosco haven't had a chance to do anything to the truck so will have to wait to after Christmas before I get time to take it off the road.

I brought a ARB air locker for the truck but wont fit until I pull it of the road for the gearbox rebuild. I'm not sure if I should fit it on the back or front at this stage but thinking of running it on the back with maybe a LSD or self locking Lokka on the front.
Any off you guys with experience please help me decide what end it's best suited.
Thanks guy for any help.

I would go selectable front, lokka rear of 2 selectable isn't an option.

I haven't had an auto locker in the front of a truck, but I have had in the rear, and having had that, I wouldn't want something that you can't run completely open on the steer axle.

I could get another air locker but I like the look of the auto lokka from what I have read they drop out as soon as one wheel speeds up and there supposed to give no input into steering until the wheels self center and it drops back in. That's why I'm asking the questing hopping someone has had one in the front. I'm also guessing the old truck will go most places with out even locking the hubs in so it will only get used in the rough stuff climbing hills, soft sand and creek crossings etc.

For what it's worth here (i am not very experienced in 4x4ing), i loved the flexibility of the mechanical engagement of 4-wheel-drive, manual-locking front hubs, and driver-selectable rear and front diff locks. For example, reversing a trailer in low range, while in two-wheel-drive, provides unbeatable low-speed control; in the same vein, locking the rear diff and putting the box in low range just to walk out of a soft spot (without locking the front hubs, a bonus situation when that allows me to not go outside and lock the front hubs when it's -30C), i find is fantastic. But i've never had air lockers.

Bad luck about the gearbox whine oz! My H41 whines like a banshee so I'm on the hunt for a spare to rebuild with new seals and bearings. No doubt you'll get to yours first! You'll be stoked when it's sorted!

4 speed mate. 1972-1980 with the one piece t-case.

After 13 months on the road my steering box decided to start leaking and it's a bit notchy so time to replace. I got lucky and found a good second hand box to bolt in. Anyway my plans for the old steering box is to strip it down and run the internals out of a hilux steering box here are the two side by side. The seal kits from both boxes are the same so anyone having a hard time finding a good box there is light at the end off the tunnel with plenty off spares in the wrecking yards. :)

don't know if you remember my fun times with my steering box, but the replacement part number for the outer seal at the arm end does NOT fit. totally wrong size. I ended up finding a aftermarket seal of the same size as original, but that one for some reason didn't seal real well either so I double sealed and so far it is leak free.

The pitman arm end of the hilux box looks larger then the Hj75 box so maybe that was the problem with your rebuild kit. There's only two models from the hilux that has the same kit and there the RN and YN lux models.

My 32 year hj75 fuel tank started leaking from a rust hole where the baffle inside collects crap. It turned out to be a huge job removing and fitting the new second hand tank. First off remove the tail shaft and exhaust system I had to cut my 2 1/2 exhaust in half to gain access to the tank because there no flange but soon will be added . Next on the agenda was removing all the plumbing and the wiring for fuel gauge. Drop the brackets and tank guard jemmy tank around in chassis rails to gain access to the rear cab mounts they need undoing then jack both sides of the cab up 1 inch then lift plumbing side of the tank and push and jemmy as far between the chassis rail and cab floor. Hopefully the other side of the tank lip will just clear to drop down and remove. Reverse procedure refitting the new tank and it went straight back in with no cursing. The breather line and clamps needs to be fitted first the main large rubber line needs to be fitted next with the tank lose and clamps left lose once the tank is mounted tight you can go back and fit the rest of the rubber lines and do the clamps up on the large fill line as it will be fully seated the rest is straight forward. My fuel pick up filter was well and truly blocked with crap so I'm looking forward to test driving the 12ht tomorrow.
I spent two afternoons and a weekend on this tank removal so the summery above is basically what I learnt doing the job hope it may help others.
