g'day all. i dont get to the 70 page much; im one of those geeks who hang out on the 25 page.

anyway i just bought this cheap HZJ75 for a work ute. has come off the road and hit a culvert; came with a very bent front diff housing (had to cut the housing to get the axles out) and destroyed springs. not much other damage. had it running; is a good cheap ute apart from that.

i had a donor HZJ75 front housing from a very rusty ex miner. one spring perch was totally disintergrated. cut perch from bent housing but all in all im losing faith in this rusty donor housing. once i hacked the old perch off discovered it is also rusted very thin under the spring perch.

but i have some HJ75 front assemblies to hand. do we think i can get one of these to work?? am happy to use assembly in its entirety if needs be; ie centre, calipers etc etc. prob even turn up a HJ75 front shaft if i need to. have just noticed the diff centre on the HZJ looks a bit lighter duty.

also what about HJ75 springs; thay should do the trick? about to go and start my own research but thought i would ask here to get mudders opinions. i just want to get this thing back on the road as cheaply as possible. thanks.

here a pic of the mess im in at the moment with both assemblies in bits!

Man I love your pics west very busy.
The early hj75 has the same diff front and back but the hzj has a hilux type diff but a stronger housing. I'm sure the hj75 front will mate up with minor mods but the flange plate from tail shaft to diff may need a cut and shunt from both models.
Please keep the photo's coming top right hand corner what's the old sedan ?

sedan is ford pilot; english ford immediately post ww2. i hear that post war the usa gave ford england their old pre war tooling to get up and running with. so to all intents this is a mid late 30s american ford rebadged right down to the old school 21 stud head v8.

yea sure i can make this work. bit of a learning curve for me. any input appreciated

The suspension should interchange. The HZJ75 is a smaller diff but it holds up ok. Where are you? Is it a sheep/cattle station in the Murchison?

HJ75 large front diff
HZJ75 small front diff
you will need the driveshaft stub from the older ute
the hub to hub diffs will bolt right in
the newer and older 75 series had 4.11 diffs (usually)
i did this on a troopie i built. great upgrade. i wanted the 80 series rear locker in the front of the troopie instead of the tiny post 90 unit.
hopes this helps

cobbled this together with hj75 housing, centre, axles/cv'c and hzj75 diff flange. made the outer axles up out of the best bits I had to hand; this all pretty much interchangeable. I used hzj callipers and backing plates. new swivel kit, wheel bearings, rotors, flange seal and calliper overhall. scrounged up springs, shockies and enough bushes out of my junk. also swapped out the sump because it was a bit 'difigured' and very accessable. this old girl still needs love but first signs are good. the steering wheel is buckled from the impact; ive yanked it around ab bit still distracting to drive with; I keep turning the wipers on with my knuckles when I turn left! plan to drive and clean for a bit to get a feel for her. next on the agenda will be rear axle love, transmission oil change and straighten out a few 'quirks' to the cab. and fix some taillights. then maybe uni joints and new brake flex lines. reckon shes gonna be a nice ute.

hj75 is a 1989 in my fav 70 colour. we bought it in the mid 90s and was pride of the fleet for many years. the floors rust out in all my 70s; lots of red dirt and mulga leaf get in under the floormat and holds moisture. the old bare floor 45s don't rust anywhere near as bad here.

I actually had to "Google" the Mulga Tree. :)

put a few hundred miles on this now and very happy with it.

when this ute left the road it was fully loaded and the load shifted forward and knocked the cab out of shape a bit; follow the lines of the upper door to see what I mean. pulled this straight with some ratchet straps; not micron perfect but good enough for what it is. straightened the tray headboard the same way and sorted out all the trayside latches also.
