Total newb question here, what does this lever do?

PTO stands for Power Take Off.

It operates the winch on the front of the vehicle.

Put the transfer case into neutral, make sure the winch cable is not hooked onto the front of the car, make sure the winch lever next to the roll of cable is released - it's a dog clutch arrangement so the drum should just turn freely.

Then put your foot on the clutch, engage the PTO lever, engage first gear, let teh clutch out slowly listening for very odd noises. If you hear them - you stop!! When you have the PTO engaged you will see the winch trying to drive the drum, but it can't because you've disengaged the dog clutch.

If the engine is idling and you have some winch cable pulled out, a few metres, engage the dog clutch and let the winch pull it in. Now wrap it around a tree and pull the tree over. Then sit back and feel satisfied. :-)

FWIW...my PTO winch in my BJ74 makes all sorts of noises when it's working. Sounds kind of like loud gears in heavy machinery. I've never had a problem with it and have pulled out cars and a mini-truck with no problems. I think this type of noise is normal.

Used OME Lift

Hey Radd Cruisers,

I have been thinking of ordering a new Dakar/Emu lift for my truck. What kinda shape are your used springs in? Are the shocks shot?

Thanks,

Trevor

Stone,
Fair point, Mine made a clacking noise too and I realised one of the uni joints on the shaft was hitting a protector plate that had been knocked out of place. Bent the plate back a bit to give a bit of clearance and all was quiet again.

Then I found the PTO drive shaft was hard to turn, so had both bearings replaced. They'd seized up over time with water etc. Then bug..er me, a coupla months later and the front bearing starts getting tight again. Luckily it's not an item I use very much...

NSK part number for the shaft bearings is NSK6205DU
apparently the Ujoints are same as steering yolks but I have not confirmed this.

Radd Cruisers: I might have taken you up a few months ago when I replaced the rear springs on my BJ60, but I'll have to pass right now, thanks for the offer.

Hey Deisel Weasel,

That's my truck!! Good luck with yours when it gets here, you're gonna love it.

Monton.
