HI fellas,

I need to remove my Front shaft due to slop, but cant figure out the best way to remove the Transfer case end due to the Transfer X member being in the way and limiting access to get spanners on or decent tooling to get the stubborn bolts off.

whats the best way to attack this without dropping the Transfer case X member?
also whats the advantage of the Carden Joint over not having one, about $500 for complete front shaft but is without the carden joint.. im not sure if the slop is from the Carden ball joint or the uni joint (spider), i was going to replace Uni joints but now im thinking of just buying a whole new shaft without the carden joint

Thanks in advanced

The double cardan joint copes with the angle better than a standard one and offers more clearance over the front cross member. I have definitely removed my HJ47 Double Cardan without having to drop the cross member.

The double cardan joints are very difficult to get rebuilt.. Hardy Spicer will rebuild them but its really expensive. You'll be fine with a new tailshaft without the double cardan though, not all HJ47s were fitted with the double cardan from factory.

When my double cardan failed I installed an HJ60 front shaft with a spacer on the diff end to resolve the length issue.. its been in for years and has done 1000s of klms of 4x4 driving since. The HJ60 also has the double cardan - a second hand one + spacer was waay cheaper than getting mine rebuilt.

If you've done a 5 speed upgrade, you may struggle without the double cardan though.

Any tricks to getting the flange bolts off?

Have you done a 5 speed upgrade?

I dont recall any specific difficulty I had.. the bolts are very tight so good ring spanners (two of) are required and if they arent good long ones you'll have to use your foot on the spanner to break the nut loose.

Still the 4 spd, Ill give it another good hot crack, Ive given them a liberal Inox and soaked - will get onto hardy spicer too. thanks :)

sorted, 12mm and 14mm ring spanners and found the insert opening in the X member to put the 12mm in
