Hitchgate swing out tire carrier?

Anyone have one of these for their 100? I've seen a few people fabricate their own hitch mount tire carrier for part time use but does anyone have one of these? Do they like them? This has been on the forum, but I haven't seen anyone who has one.

I suppose the downside is of course clearance, strength, price.

The upside is that you have a part time spare carrier and you can keep a stock rear bumper.

That is pretty slick. At around $500 I could be tempted but at over $650, I'd rather just spring for a full bumper with side protection.
 
I was thinking it would be good for people who would part time overland. Perhaps if you wanted to road trip your 100 up the Dalton highway and wanted 2 spares. You could keep one underneath and add this on the back, it can hold jerry cans as well.

I wish some one made something that you could cut a hold in your bumper slide it up from underneath and have a swing out with factory hitch. Kind of like what someone did with an 80s.

I guess I was looking for something that didn't get bolted on, hence the hitch idea(part time Overlander). Also hoping for something that didn't need a beefed up rear suspension like an ARB rear.

I suppose a roof rack is the way to go, and just have a tire and a few other nick knacks up there to keep the roof weight light. Put up an empty gas can and only fill it for any stretches where you might need some extra gas.

I have a different hitch-mount spare carrier. With the installation of the sub-tank, lost the spare, so on road trips, I install the hitch-mounted spare. It's heavy with a 33" tire on it but at least I'm not screwed if I have a flat. I'd like to get the Slee bumper/carrier at some point.
 
You know... If it fits your needs go for it. Most on here either wheel or pretend to and see the benefit of a complete rear assembly like a Slee or BIOR bumper and tire carrier. Of course those options come at a considerable added cost. If this fits YOUR needs, I say go for it. I for one would love to hear what you think if you do.

Me, I wheel some what mildly. Mostly limited by the people I travel with and their lack of an appropriately equipted rig or experience. The hardest trail I have done yet is the Barney Riley (californiajeeper.com) when I had the chance to meet up with some guys from the expedition portal. My factory bumper has some nice rash marks on each corner from that trail. The combination of that trip and a 2000 mile trip through Baja I just finished convinced me I do need a rear bumper with more departure and a way to carry extra fuel on the back. Now if I can just sell of some reloading gear, shooting gear, and an old diamond rig to pay for it....

I dont see myself changing my factory roof rack any time soon. I use a box on my roof in the winter to carry skis and snowboards and I havnt seen a aftermarket roof rack that will allow me to use my box yet. I also dont plan on ever putting a rooftop tent up there. If I get one of those it will be on a trailer (which I have been drping hints to my wife we are going to need soon (2nd kid on the way and a dog make packing tough). I also think it is important to not put to much weight on the roof.

With all that said, It sound from your post this fits your needs (I wrote that earlier didnt I?). If you think your adventures will change to more rugged trips then save for an ARB rear. It is pretty close to factory in appearance and a bit more beefy. Talk to Christo (Slee) to see if you would have to upgrade the rear suspension with it. Or just get this and fill the gap you are missing.....
 
AO rack with landing pad 1s mounted in the side tracks and some towers...you could put the dorkpod on. :flipoff2:

Next winter I may remove the AO rack and just use the feet in the AO mounting rails...but right now I dont have anywhere to put it :frown:

So, buy the AO rack and then buy the towers to get back to a factory set up????? That is smart:flipoff2:!

Lol hitchgate is like $700, at that price you could almost get a BIOR or 4x4labs bumper

I had my spare on my roof rack of my FJ60. Did not like...
 
Where are you going to put your hi-lift, shovel, ax, firewood and jerry cans?

Shovel, AX, Firewood (click) can also put camp chairs, fishing poles, camp table, etc.
Jerry cans: well a Slee or BIOR rear bumper of course silly..... still in the works. For now I have only had (1) trip down in Baja where I really needed the extra gas and just carried them inside the car with me.......

I've been looking into something like this as well. I would love a Slee or a 4x4labs rear bumper but it takes many many years to save up the money for something like that and when I do finally have the money, it's hard to justify spending it. The Wilco Hitchgate, so far, seems to be a pretty good alternative. I'm also a part timer and use my 80 almost daily. I'm thinking this would be nice because I can leave it off for town driving and then when I go to the big city, camping and whatnot , I could throw it on and away I go. I too have a roof rack but the thought of a 35" tire taking up precious space is rather discouraging.
