Looking for some opinions regarding damage that was sustained to a one of my NEW (1000 miles) Bridgestone REVO's. The wifey somehow picked-up a 4 in long, 3/8 in diameter hitch pin which fully penetrated the tire. The only exposed part was the end of the pin and the pin handle. The local gargae was reluctant to patch or plug the tire due to the potential damage to the cords. My original plan was to patch or plug the tire to use as a spare. I really hate to put a $196 tire (Tire Rack price w/ shipping) to the trash pile at the curb. Any ideas on feasibility of repairs ?

Thanks

Road hazard coverage?

IMHO, trash it. With that large of a puncture is is likely the tire will fail in the future, potentially in a dramatic fashion (when loaded at speed and/or going around a corner as that is when it is under the most stress). Is it worth $200 to put your or wife's safety at risk? If you insist on running it, at least put it on the rear where the failure is less likely to cause an accident.

No Road Hazard coverage.......I should have thought about it given the fact that two of my new Michelin LTX were flat two weeks after being installed 6 years ago !

I would trust it as a spare, but you need to treat the spare like a 'donut' tire. Only drive on it for as long as it takes you to get to the tire shop to purchase a new tire.

Do not add it to a 5 tire rotation.

I'm always the paranoid person in the group but I would not even use the thing for a spare! It is your wife's safety. JMHO.

It is definitely damaged beyond first line usage. Very questionable as a spare as well. The biggest issue is whether your wife would remember to nurse it to a shop ASAP on that spare. If she got in the truck and drove off at speed it would bw a WAG how long it would last.

I got a nail puncture in the sidewall of my new Revo. I never patch a puncture like that and use it as a #1 tire. Only problem is I forgot to tell the tire shop to keep it to use as a spare.:crybaby:

Please pardon the detour here, but I got a rock puncture in the sidewall of one of my new Revo's. As much as I love the tires performance in almost every area, I have to say the sidewalls are more fragile than the BFG AT's and BFG AT KO's that I ran for roughly ten years. The Revos kick the BFG's ass in every other area but that sidewall is somewhat fragile. I wont air down lower than 18psi with the Revos which is pretty hard for some rough and rocky trails around here. This hurts their trail performance as well when compared with something that can safely sit at 10psi. Ohh, I did not use that as the spare either, just not worth the risk. Sorry for the detour. HTH.

Wow, A/T's generally don't do well in my experience much below 20 PSI. Consider that they are usually rated at max load at 50-70 PSI. Just my experience.

Find a friend with revos and road hazard haha.

Uh, let's just say, that another member of this forum, convinced me that road hazard warranty at America's tire is a very good idea, and that you should always buy tires there.:D

Thanks again NCD, I have not forgotten.

Road hazard. If none, buy a new one with it and call it a day.

No muss, no fuss, wipe hands on pants.

Thanks for all the replies. It's going to the curb to meet the trash guys on Tuesday morning.

I had that exact discusion with my tire guy before and after I purchased them. In 20 years of running BFG's on my trucks I have had only one sidewall puncture. Previously I had Brigestones on my '94 Trooper RS and had three sidewall punctures. Switched to BFG's and didn't have another one.

My tire guy convinced me to try the Revo's. I am glad I did and if I get good milage out of them, without any further sidewall issues, I may buy them again. I am undecided at this point. He also advised against road hazard because it doesn't cover "off road" use.:whoops:

i know what you're going through....these tires had less than 400 miles on them when a treeroot (not the mudder, but if he had anything to do with it, i'll make him pay :D ), punctured my sidewall.

i have friends in low places, so it is not so legally repaired, and is literally a get off the trail, never ever air it down, don't even think about high speeds spare.

can you get a tube for it? if not, just get a new tire (preferably on road hazard, which i'm always too cheap to spring for  )

and yes, that is a scary looking bulge that you see in the "repair"

Funny, the one sidewall puncture I did have in my BFG was from a stick. Ok, more of a pungy stick close to a logging slash pile. I guess BFG's are good for everything, except sticks.

Another vote for "it's not worth saving money" to take a risk. That could fail any time, and I don't think you could forgive yourself if it did and anyone got hurt. Just not worth it, in my opinion. I vote for replacement.
