After a day of emails and a two-hour phone call tonight, we've come to the realization that we need to push HIHX out until 2022.

It really comes down to the restrictions. Colorado is still under the "6 feet of separation" order. The cleaning requirements alone make it nearly impossible for us to manage. If this was HIH6 it would be easier to figure out a way to cut the numbers and just stay apart, but HIHX represents 10 years of something that we (all of us) have created. We want that to be the celebration it should be. Anything less than that doesn't feel right.

Wednesday night at Wyman under the string lights and mountains and stars... Not possible
Friday night pot luck with tables and tables of some of the most amazing food from around the world.. Not possible
Saturday Night BBQ assembled by a handful of super close friends that help us pull that off each year.. and served by two dummies. Not possible.
The best raffle ever hosted by any event ever... Not possible.

What are we without that? It most definitely isn't right for a celebration grown on 10 years of high fives, hugs, belly laughs and just generally being around cool people. Imagine seeing friends that you only get to see once each year and staying a Land Cruiser's length away from them. That's doesn't sound fun at all. Colorado isn't going anywhere, we'll try again next year.

I can attest to the time and consideration put into this decision. We wanted to hold out hoping something would change. But as @paflytyer mentioned, all the stuff that makes HIH what it is, either wouldn’t happen or would have a ton of regulation around it. Not particularly fun for us or fun for those of you relying on us to make your Colorado adventure a great one.

HIHX will happen. 2022 will be that year.

bummer is the nice word to describe our bad news. Sorry guys. ☹️

I think y'all are doing the right thing. Let's hope none of these restrictions will be in place in '22, at this point I don't trust anything...

HIHX 2022 DATES ARE JULY27-JULY31 2022

You will remain on the registration list from 2020. Initial registration spots will go to those attendees that were registered for 2020 and still have a 100 series.

We're taking a lot of heat on social media for cancelling. Silverton, Telluride and Ouray are still open, the trails will be open, businesses are open. We simply could not have held a dedicated indoor/outdoor event with 300+ people AND abide by the state regulations and guidelines. Things are definitely opening back up and restrictions are loosening. They're not open enough or loose enough for us to hold the three main gathering nights. Imagine trying to maintain 6 feet of separation on Friday night?

Some suggested just doing it all outside. Those people have obviously never been to HIH. It is absolutely guaranteed to rain. That's the San Juan mountains in late July. Soggy food sucks. It sucks even worse if everyone is in their 100s eating it in a big muddy field. "But I camp all the time in the rain!" says a single dude with all the overland bolt-ons. HIH is a family event and a gathering event, it's not about proving that you can camp and wheel in the rain. If the kids can't run around together and the families can't gather together, it's not HIH. We simply will not compromise 10 years of hard work to host an event that does not meet the very standards we were built on. If you scoff at that, HIH isn't for you. <~~Someone is undoubtedly gonna flame that and we simply don't care. If you've been to HIH, you know there isn't a rude person anywhere in sight. We will not compromise on what should be a huge celebration with friends, whether it's their first HIH, or their 10th.

Someone on IG called us "pansies" for cancelling. Imagine that. Many have been super cool and understanding. Most are still planning to be in the area for that week, just like last year. The small group of loyal HIH members that went last year had a blast. They'll be doing their thing again this year. They're longtime HIH attendees and know the trails well.. Reach out to them and join up. HIH isn't like other events where the trails are the main ingredient. It's all the other stuff that makes HIH what it is. Gary knows the names of every trail within 100 miles. Lee is gonna jump something and definitely gonna break something. A-A-Ron is gonna do something very Arkansas. Great times will be had in 2021.

2022 will be our year to get back together and do it right. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, HIHX is for you.

Lee has graduated from breaking his truck. He is much wiser these days. He now breaks his body.

On that note, how's your face @ga12r1 ?

Anyone that wants to join us on the trails, hit us up. We'll be there and will be causing a ruckus per usual.

Let's not forget the time he almost melted something in the Ozarks back in Feb. I'm sure @aaronrules won't forget! And I'm not talking even about the mustard bottle @DirtDawg !

HIH will always be a slice of heaven for me. I can't wait to experience that again.

Very well put Stan. You are 100% right. HIH isn’t about being the “super overlander” who can deal with any kind of conditions. It really is about being able to hang out with everyone while being surrounded by some of the best scenery/backcountry you can find in the US.
And you can bet your butt I’m going to something very Arkansas...I’ll be triple locked this year!

LOL - So how are ya'll going to handle two wild Arkies at the same event? :-)

Well said. Folks can and should still trek out there to enjoy the area if they can. HIH doesn't have to be the only reason you go to the San Juans with your 100!
