The best way to get a fast winch is to get a PTO. Check out the vehicles competing in the Malayasian Rainforest Challenge. The winner of this years Australian Outback Challenge had a PTO fitted to his Suzuki. It winched quicker than it could drive and believe me it was fast.

Well, I've wired up an old Ramsey 12V winch to my 24V Cruiser.

It's certainly horny! I'll see how long it lasts.
 
all fine and dandy for fully supported comp trucks. i see no advantage for an average joe weekend wheeler that needs it to work when his truck is dead in a puddle. ill keep the 8274.
 
That's the idea - it's for a comp truck. What type of truck do you have Zimm?

checked out the diagram on the hydro site. they make the electric out to be more complicated than it is. there is no absolute need for dual alts batts and isolators, especially in a crew supported rig. all it needs to operate reliably is a bigger alt and battery over stock. oh, and 2 wires. the hydro will need a pump and reservoir added under a crowded hood, which is sure to inflate costs.

also, the winch dies with motor when the coil gets wet, filter clogs etc. i.e. a winch is supposed to function not only as a primary system enhancer, but as an emergency redundancy backup. the hydro systems seem to sacrifice the redundancy, for all out enhancement. maybe this is good on an all or nothing comp truck?

im betting the dual 8274 setup (that is frigging cool) wont cost much more in the end. all they have to do now is add the airpump option to it.
 
Either way it is 3-4K if I remember correctly by the time both are purchased. A good case for the PTO which you can run at all out speeds - as long as the pin doesn't break - and you need to be in 2 places at once to operate the things (toyota oem PTO).
 
Here's an idea for a badass winch-

take two 8274's, cut off the outer 25% of each drum(the pillow bearing side).

Weld drums together.

Wire one motor opposite the other so both gearboxes and motors turn the drum in the same direction.

Twice speed at any given load over a plain 8274, and 50% more line capacity.

Sure, twice the frictional loss, but twice the robustness as well. No worries about overloading the gears or brake with the stress two motors could put on those parts.

Also, when you're talking about winching 8k lbs or so, frictional loss of about 4 small spur gears doesn't really matter.
 
Hi Guys, I want to biuld a high speed winch, anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I know that the US team who won the Morrocan Outback Challenge had a faster winch - any idea what they did?

I believe the winch they used was a Warn 8274 fitted with a 6.5 Horse motor. Which manufacturer and model I don't know but I'm sure you could ask Scott for more details.
 
Twin gearboxed 8274 works really well, especially with twin 24v motors. It just doesnt slow down, and on the test bed when the first one was made it pulled 14.2 tonnes single line pull, when we were trying to rate it to know what cable to run. You can winch if nothing is moving though, because something is going to give, it is a very powerful tool.

We turn the second gearbox around, run the 2 motors beside each other, we make a new drum longer, and larger centre dia to wind on faster, and we are now working on new gear sets to go from 134 to 1 to around 100 to 1 to make them even faster, .

12v version pulls 10 tonne single line pull, and doesnt slow down when winching either.

Running 24v through a 12v motor works ok, until it fries, when it does, it cooks the whole motor, so best thing to do is carry a spare motor if going down this road. A 24v system requires 2 alternators, one for 24 and one for 12, and 4 batteries, one for 12v system,a nd one lot for 24v.

The Gigglepin twin motor 8274's just break all the time.

The suzooks from the outback this year ran datsun 120y diff centres driven by the pto so they were stepped up 3 to 1 in speed.

The son of the guy that owns http://www.landcruisermountainpark.com.au/ did this same mod to his comp truck back in 04 or 05. It used to go pretty well. Don't know if he still runs this setup.

That was awesome to watch in real life. The course up until that winch was cool too. There were a heap of tight hairpin turns that all of the full size rigs had to do three point turns around. The little Zuke had cutting brakes on the rear wheels and just slid round the corners without backing off the throttle:cool:
