Just finished my desmog on my 2F about 500 miles ago. Now when it gets hot it starts to whistle....LOUD. Engine speed does not change the pitch or loudness. It seems to be towards the firewall. I think it is related to the rain, as today is when it started, and i have not had it out in heavy rain for about 2 years. Also at idle it comes and goes. It does not effect the way it runs, and the idle speed has not changed since it started.:meh::wrench:

Any help is much appreciated

most likely a vacuum leak somewhere....

well it is not the break booster, and the only vac line i have goes to to dist..........some moisture got into the dizzy the other day. Could it be the bearing going out?

If it was the dist. bearing, then the noise would change with engine speed.

Have you replicated the noise and poked your head under the hood? Which side of the engine is it coming from?

You DO have a vacuum line going to the brake booster. Look again. If you don't, you won't have power brakes.

unplugged that and the sound did not go away...it is so loud it seems to come from every direction, but is loudest on the passenger side........cam bearings seizing up? ARGH Im getting that doom and gloom feeling. Im lost on it:meh:

The 26th i will go to harbor freight to get a stethoscope

well the whistle is now gone, And the idle went up 100 rpm. There was a crack on the intake where the heat riser is....a very slight crack, hairline. I JB'd over it and mabey it gave. I will order a block off plate and seal it all up, after i shoot it with some carb clean and see if it is cracked there.:bang:

I also have a whistling problem. I recently picked up my first cruiser, an 85 FJ60. It will whistle when cold. It is pretty loud and pretty damn annoying. It sounds to me to becoming from the driver's side of the engine, maybe just under the intake manifold. Hard to tell, as it is really loud. When I rev the engine it will stop for a second or two and then start back up. It stops after the engine is finally warm. I have tried pulling vac lines and putting my thumb over vac lines or diaphragm inlets. I just can't seem to track it down. I have just been putting up with it and driving it regularly, but I noticed someone mentioned cam bearings...really?

It has 205,000 mi.
I changed the oil about two weeks, 600 miles ago, and the oil still looks like I just poured it out of the valvoline container.

Check the torque on our intake/exhaust manifold, when they start develop a leak there is a whistle. You really need to re torque if you have headers. :D

I knew that you should re-torque after 1k miles, I have only gone 600. I used red locktite (mmm smell like candy) on the threads and figured I would be ok. Do you re-torque because the bolts back out or because they stretch? I used grade 8.8 IIRC grade 5's came off. Should I have used 10?

In my gut i knew it must have been intake, you think a re-torque will fix it?

thanks -mike

haha mudda beeches....I retorqued the manifold, and it did not go away, and I said dam* im effed....Then i sparyed carb clean at the base of the weber, and the whistle stopped and the motor died..haha i just need to buy better gaskets.....Im freakin releaved:smokin:
