Changed my oil. It was DARK. IDLES AT AROUND 1500 now, drops down to 1000 when I put it in gear. What went wrong or whats happening???

Thanks guys and gals

Probably nocked a vacuum line off, look around by the filter and air cleaner.

you mean fj62? also look for wiring connectors you might have bumped loose along the way. How much experience do you have with this rig? is this odd, or do you know enough to say? could be a couple of things, we need more background to steer you...

I've had this vehicle for a month and it's always idles nicely at around 700k especially after I changed the spark plugs.

Changed the oil yesterday and it's running like s***. The high idle is worrisome. It wants to pull forward more than usual while at a stop light with foot on break as well, as weird as that sounds...

Trying to understand the vacuum line diagrams is difficult for me and every picture of a 3fe engine I see has hoses in different places. For example the hoses coming off the air filter. All have two lines and some have 3. Very confused. Would having too much or too little oil cause this, I wouldn't think so and level seems to be correct.

There is a larger hose coming from distributor which isn't connected. From reading it seems like it should go to something on the firewall behind distributor but I see no connection there

pics...post pics of that loose hose...all 3FEs are pretty much plumbed the same except for desmogged ones- which are almost identical...I still wouldn't rule out loose electrical connector or fooey calibration of TPS just yet...did you have the battery disconnected at any time? If yes, you will need to drive it a bit for the computer to reset its baselines...might be all there is...otherwise, you should download any and all FSMs that might apply from this guy>>> For Sale: - 40, 50, 60, and 80 series FSM for a hell of a price. send him some beer money, get yourself some beers and settle in for some reading. Put the rig into DIAGNOSTIC mode and check for codes. Post back here...

Found out where the vacuum line went. It was going from the distributor to the air intake

Car is still running like s***. Idled right at 700 before oil change and now idles at 1500-1600 and then drops to 1000 when in drive or reverse. Clunks now when going into reverse. Probably because it's revved so high. I know I was pretty careful when changing oil filter so chances of unplugging something seem low and I can't find any connections that are loose. While researching high idle causes I came across a lot of people replacing their throttle position sensor and the problem going away. I just don't understand why it was running fine before oil change and garbage right after. I'm at the point where I just made an appointment with the Toyota shop in town for next Wednesday. Just wish I could diagnose this at home.

A change in idle speed after an oil change can often be due to an air leak at the oil filler cap. Either the cap is not on tight or the oil/air seal on the cap has been compromised. Could be as easy as a new oil filler cap. Hope to help. Good luck

Also check to make sure the throttle cable didn’t get bumped or set during
The operation somehow.
The push-pull cable below and to the right of the ignition key. You never know.
