I spent yesterday adding gauges for boost, EGT, and coolant (coolant not completely done - waiting for T-splice for upper rad hose) and some other minor stuff. I have owned the truck for a few months and been concerned with heating after reading this forum all the time. Initially, the factory coolant gauge would creep above midline on hills so I did some fan clutch work and the problem seemed to resolve. Intercooler and EGT has been on my list - just not done it yet. Larger dump pipe and exhaust are done.
On a relatively cool morning today I head up the mountain to my home and my newly installed EGT gauge showed 1300 (post turbo) before I backed off! It will be interesting to see what my temp gauge for the coolant will read!
I had no idea it was getting that warm- better step up the Intercooler plans!!

That's not too bad for altitude. Even with a turbo, the engine is still working harder at these elevations. I could easily get into the 1500s with our 1HDT if I wasn't paying attention. The joke became "How fast are you going?" "oh, about 1100." I set the EGT alarm at 1200 so the :princess: wouldn't melt something. The intercooler dropped the temps but I still had to keep my eye on it.

Seeing those temps was probably a good thing for me - made me more aware of potential temps that I could see this summer pulling mountain passes.
I need to get an Intercooler plan!

Before you even intercool you could set the boost to 14psi and turn down the spill control valve a bit to run a leaner (cooler) AFR. It will net you about the same power, but you'll have much cooler EGT's. You could also use a bleed valve on the boost sensor to trick the computer into adding less fuel (seeing less boost).

Nick's suggestion is an excellent one. I ran my truck for a while that way pre intercooler. Really helped control the EGTs. It's not nearly as effective as an intercooler, but helps keep you off the redline all the time.

I must be learning a little from you guys because the first thing I did when I got home was turn back my spill control about 1/8th turn. Headed back down the mountain and we will see if it behaves differently on the way back up again.
Regarding your suggestion for boost at 14...
I dont think I saw any higher than 12 on my way up the mountain this morning - I will confirm when I head back up. Are you saying that I need to have boost slightly higher without the accompanied added fuel that the truck would “want” to add at that boost?

After backing of the Spill Control Valve about 1/8 of a turn and making the same uphill trip, EGTs dropped 100 - 150F across the board. Much less black smoke too - obviously I had it a bit rich.
I will have to read up a little more on Boost Controllers...
It sure is nice to finally have a pyro installed so that I can a little more closely monitor what my foot is doing to engine temps!
As always - thanks to all of your knowledge

Thanks for this thread.

1HD-T. 10lbs of boost. Installed an EGT within the last month or two.

At elevation going to Expo West I noticed 14-15. I was told that 12 is about all you want to run. So now, I shift from 5th to 4th on uphill. I make a conscious effort to NOT go over 12. Good? I really don't know a lot about it..........

So....got my temp gauge installed and took another drive up “the hill”. My EGTs peaked at 1200 before I backed off, but my temp gauge never reached 200F. Happily surprised by those results.
