You'll want to measure those bolts when you take them out. They have a tolerance for length and if you indeed torque them to 90 ftlbs and then did the two 90* turns they will need to be replaced.
What if I did the 90 ft lbs first is it doomed for failure or can I just leave it? I hate to disassemble it if I don't have to.

Drive it. These bolts are not moving, so whatever stretching was done they handled it without failure for 2500 miles.

out of curiosity, why reuse the old filter? Why not spend 7 dollars at Autozone and get a cheapy? Also why didn't you clean anything? Top of the pistons, camshafts, the head? I know it all works the same, but how often do you plan on being in there? Why not just start over with clean everything?

the oil filter has about 1k miles on it. i figured it was still fine and this way i only have to clean the oil off the block once.

as far as cleaning things, i did. i read you rebuild thread and i gotta say, you are doing a fine job. you could eat off that block! i am however on a time crunch. the head sat in parts cleaner before and after it was milled. could i have got that back to look like shiney new aluminum? absolutely, but time wasn't on my side. its as clean as razor blades and sctoch bright pads would get it. i cant imagine it would look brand new for very long in there.

Time crunch, answers all of my questions.

I am sure that mine is no longer clean, but it was a good feeling for a little while :D

thanks for the help guys. im gonna hopefully crack into this thing next weekend gonna have to round up some lunch money so that i can pay dan :grinpimp:

It’s a really good thread. I am struggling with my HG at the moment and learnt a lot from your experience.

I had exactly the same symptoms - typical HG thing.

I am carefully maintaining my rig taking care of proper quality fluids, their level, etc. That is why I was very disappointed when my HG failed me. The fact could be more understandable for me if the HG blew off during extreme off-road driving but on the regular highway... I lost the trust and respect for my rig.

I am going to give Dan a ring as well. I can see that he will be quite busy and tired of answering the same question and preparing the same sets for next unlucky HG owners.

At the end of my too long post I would like to ask you for an advice: which parts is it worth to change besides HG Kit benefiting from decomposed engine and easier access? Thermostat, water pomp, perhaps other things which could cause the failure or is good to change for new one.

take a deep breath and get the hg fixed. it has its quarks but i believe its still one of the best rigs out there. she'll remain true.

i replaced the fuel filter too. it's underneath the intake and had to come out anyways. and its cheap. so do that for sure. the thermostat and water pump are at the front so they could be done at any time. i did the alt brushes too, because it was already on the bench. i guess the main things are part of the kit. ie. valve seals, injector o-rings, the stuff thats really buried in there. and like it's been mentioned here, if you want to clean up the oil pump, do it when the exhaust manifolds are off. good luck Izzy. let us know how it goes.

HG Gone?

I am amazed at how many other guys are dealing with the same scenario as I am right now. This HG THING .Dan must know when the calls are directed to him - its us rookies need HG kits.

I will add: how many other guys are dealing with the same scenario (...) - all over the world.

I will attach my HG pictures shortly. HG failed at 6th - of course.

There were a lot of petrol 1FZ-FEs in OZ and South America (VZ). Most of the rest of the world got diseasel 80-Series.

The US market is the only part of the world (that I know of) that got the EGR system and we are the only part of the world where the vehicles are known to have HG failures. I suspect, but cannot prove, that the HG failures are related to the EGR system.

Dan is collecting the failed gaskets if you want to contribute to the pile. I think he taunts his Toyota rep when he visits.

My rig is 100% US version with US HG problems. Majority of my European friends have HDJs. I haven't heard about HG problem in their cases even though they can legitimate with impassive mileages.

I'm going to fix HG and give it a second chance. From that what I can read on the ih8mud and I can tell from my 9mths experience with 80 series it is worth it.

I also thought we were the only ones to get aluminum heads as well.

I believe the cast iron heads were primarily carb'd East European vehicles plus some of the Toyota of Gibraltar rigs; many went to the UN. I think the South American, South African, Middle East, Far East, JDM, and OZ trucks all had the same alloy head that we got. It is possible that all FI variants got the alloy head and all carb'd variants got cast iron. Anyone know for sure?

in any event, with this many s***ting the bed during winter I can't wait til this summer.

Nah - Australian Petrol 80's are aliminium Heads too... but we don't have the EGR system :)

welp, cruiserdan got me fixed up with the necessary item to fix this blown HG I'm headed down to the shop this evening to pull it the rest of the way apart.

just wanted to let yall know how i took this thing apart.

1.Take out air cleaner box
2. everything from exhaust side off
3. throttlebody off
4.vacuum thing behind throttle body off
5. unplug everything from the harness and get wires out of the way
6. distributer and plug wires out
7. valve cover off
8.timing chain tentioner out
9. tied up timing chain to get out of the way until time(use a long string cause your gonna have to fish it through the head when u take it off)
10. Fuel line disconnected
11.cams out head bolts out.....and off she comes with the intake attached

+/_ a few little things

my reason for telling yall this is (for the men out there with the AKA: 12.50 fingers LOL) that i saved hours upon hours of trying to fish all of those intake bolt out by just leaving the whole freakin thing connected and taking it all out at once. (it also make a good handle when trying to set that stinkin thing in there) I then take it apart when i have sitting nicely on my workbench with lots of room to work.

it all goes back together the same way. Forget that chiltons manual, the first time that i did htis HG thing i followed the instruction step by step and found myself doing kama sutra postion under my car tryin to get those intake bolts out.:bang:

But anyway its just advice take it or leave it just wanted to help out the weary HG changer:cheers:
