Hi everyone-

I've got an '80 BJ42 with a 3B that recently got a bad batch of fuel put into it. I had the fuel system purged and it was running fine for a day or so, then on a short downhill run it began hesitating as if it had run out of fuel. Thinking it was the fuel filter I put a new one in, but after about five minutes of running fine it's giving the same problem - intermittent serious hesitation, followed by a short period of smooth driving.

I'm hoping it isn't something serious like the fuel pump, but I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what it might be?

Thanks, I know it's a bit of a noob question.

Air in the system?

Did you purge the fuel lines?

I had a local shop purge the fuel system - they changed the fuel lines entirely (they needed it) so I assume they did. How do you get air out of the fuel system?

Some Landcruisers have a gauze filter inside the fuel tank on the end of the pickup line. I know the 60 and 80 series do, and subsequent models. Not sure about yours. If that is blocked, you will continue to have the same symptoms.

If they have not done up a clamp on the new fuel lines, and air is being sucked in, it will also create problems. Worth checking.

I have taken to covering the male fitting that I am sliding a hose over with a sealant like gasket sealant, the black sticky stuff, which provides a better seal than simply a hose onto steel. It also prevents weeping out the end of the hose which then helps to degrade the rubber fuel lines by the biodiesel. If you use such a sealant, obviously only use what you need so it won't get onto the inside of the fuel line and find it's way into your filter.

I assume the repair shop also changed out your fuel filter.

I know on the 2H and 12h-t models, the inlet to the lift pump has a gauze filter built into the banjo bolt. That may need cleaning too if it exists on your engine. If this, or the fuel pickup, are blocked, the repair shop has not done the right thing by you and it'd be worth pointing out their oversights.

Getting air out of the system is easy by simply priming the fuel pump with the plunger. If the engine has been running, it is safe to assume air is out of the system. The problem you 'may' have, is extra air coming in, or an unresolved blockage.

Try with your gas cap off or at least loose, this will help if the system is creating vacuum.

Take the fuel pickup out of the tank and check it for pinholes...

It sounds like air and it is super easy to check!

Start your truck and crack the nut on injectors one at a time, watch for bubbles and when you have no bubbles, tighten it.

After you go through them once or twice, you should have no air.

Now you get to find the source of the air. :)
