I just picked up a 83 FJ60. I really like it, carbed, manual choke, 4-speed, but its gonna take a little getting use to. It rides a lot like my old 67 Dart, kinda floats along on the road. I think the steering and handling needs some improvement.
It has a few issues,
rusty 1/4's and lower tailgate
fuel gauge doesn't work
Tach doesn't work
leaf springs are weak
Shifter seems to be "sloppy"

Is it normal for the steering to feel "loose"??
How about the play in the shifter?? Its shifts ok, there is just a lot of play when in gear. Is there a bushing kit or something to "tighten" it up??

I would greatly appreciate any help, tips, ideas, or suggestions from anyone that is familar with the 60's.

Here are a few pic's of the "Crusty Cruiser", the wife named it that tonight during here first ride in it.

Its official, I love Land Cruisers so I guess its time to join the TLCA.
Where do I sign up??

Thanks for any help.

Congrats!
As far as the shifter goes, there is a bushing in there and it wears out over time. SOR (specter off road) sells a neoprene replacement that should last longer and stiffen it up a right.
For the steering, I recommend a front end rebuild with new wheel and knuckle bearings, axle seals and tie rod ends. Kurt from Cruiser Outfitters has a nice kit for a good price. The origal stuff is likely shot and that is what is causing your steering to feel "loose".
Have fun, it looks like you've got the right size garage for the work.

Oh and for TLCA sign-up, click Here... tell 'em stump sent you... not really but if it asks who referred you, my TLCA # is 6451.

Sweet, and a great winch to boot. let me know if you want to sell it.

do I see spray foam filler in the drivers side rear quarter?? :) I really, really , really wanted to go back to a 60 series but, I had to settle for something else to keep the peace....

Nice ride!

I guess you're going to score a 40 next to complete the collection?

That green 80 looks very familiar!

I have a green hatch here if you want it. free, just take it. It's all full of the parts also.

Thanks everyone.

Stumpalama,
Thanks for the info.

Campoj,
A 40 would be nice but I don't see one in the near future.

norville,
Yes, that is spray foam.
I'll gladly take the hatch off your hands, thanks.
Where is Mountaintop? Is that near Effort?

fuel gauge problem might be a broken wire I cant remember if mine broke in the rear by the access hatch or where it goes through the rear quarter on the drivers side anyway good luck
