I have a 1976 FJ40 with the original 2f engine. I am having trouble getting it started. I have checked the altenator and had the battery check and toatlly charged. Both at a local parts house. Both checked out great. when I go to start it I get a real slow turn over like it is not spinning fast enough to produce the needed ignition. The coil was bought last year. It seems like something is preventing it from kicking over fast enough. With the fully charged battery and it hooked up to my 2001 Suburban and letting it sit for a few minutes it will sometimes fire. Please help. It is warm and beautiful here and my Toyota is wanting to play.

Check and make sure the engine is grounded properly. It also could be your starter. Find a local starter and dist shop and have them look at it. Most likely its a solenoid or bad ground.

I use Mr alternator on old agusta rd.

Can autozone of something test the seloniods on the starter?

Well your very close. Laurens is not that far. You guys can always join the club and sign up for help a member of the month. Thats one sure fire way of getting your cruiser going again. Also just comming to some of the meeting and events is a good way of learing how to fix things or get parts. Thats one thing I really like about the club is I get to pic members brains on cruiser stuff plus we have a pretty vast knowlege where all the parts are around here.

Yes autozone can test the starter. As long as you take it off.

look at it later to find out what happens. Looked inside the starter and found worn contacts where the plunger meets.Just bought the parts to replace and will update later this week. I had symptoms of low current also so I thought it was not the starter since it tested ok. I think it's best to open it up, while the starter is out of the vehicle and check the contacts. Do a search because it is an easy and common fix.

drive a Cruiser to our meetings?
Come to a meeting. You'll have a good time and may even learn
a thing or two about Cruisers.
The May meeting in Anderson SC at Ralph Hayes Toyota would be a
good "get to know ya'll" meeting. LOL....you might even win a door prize.

here's an updated copy on my problem

Changed the starter contacts and plunger. It worked!
Initially I called toyota dealerships parts department, not knowing what to look for, the stealership tried to sell me a new starter. I gave up on them and went to a starter store.
The copper contacts and the plunger cost only 15.00 bucks from a small store that rebuilds starters. The guy looked into the book and didn't know which part number it was, luckily it's not too far from the house and I brought the starter to him and he promptly pulled out the exact parts. This must be a common part.
If they didn't have it I would have either bought reconditioned from Autozone for 129 plus tax or waited for parts from CDan. Luckily I got it and it starts like new.

Before it used to crank 3 or 4 times before the engines fires up. Now it cranks up almost immediately.

I never knew that symtoms of a slow crank that mimicked the signs of a drained battery could be the starter.
I've changed two starter before on different vehicles and both either was cranking at normal speed or not working at all. I can give you the name of the small place that sells the parts but he doesn't do internet. I think going to a specialty starter/alternator store is the best bet because I've seen somebody else pay 12 bucks for just the contacts.

Well all that means is I need to pick you guys up in the 100 next time I make my way up to an event. I'm just down the road in Newberry.
