Is there a good place for instruction on compressor change on a 100, I searched without luck. My Chilton says they refuse to give instruction because of danger to life and equipment chapter 6-21. Bummer? help, Thanks?:meh:

Here are the instructions per Alldata:

1) Run engine at idle with the A/C on, for approx. 10 minutes
2) Stop engine
3) Disconnect negative battery cable
4) Recover refrigerant from A/C system
5) Remove engine under-cover
6) Remove drive belt
7) Disconnect discharge and suction hoses (2 bolts). Cap the open fittings to keep out moisture or dirt
8) Remove front left side driveshaft
9) Remove compressor, 1st disconnect the electrical connector, then remove the three bolts and the compressor

Install the new compressor by doing these steps in reverse order

They list the refrigerant charge amount as 23ozs. +/- 1.76 ozs.
Torque on the compressor mounting bolts is 36 ft.lbs
Torque on the two hose bolts is 7 ft.lbs

I haven't done one of these, so I don't know why they say to remove the left axle.

Hope this helps...

Wow, late but thanks im about to tacle this with a timing belt change on my 99
So timing belt, 100 k service and compressor took about 10 hours. Was able to get compressor out and back in without pulling axle. Used one of those articulating type sockets in 14 mm. Pulled skids and left tire.

After you replaced compressor did you just take it to a shop to have them flush and fill the system?

I'm about to tackle this this week and am not sure if I should flush everything while I have the compressor out. I don't have equipment to flush system so I'm not sure what to do. Any help I'd appreciated

Replace the AC filter with the compressor. Try to stay with OEM and new O-rings.
You can refill it easily, try the Eric the car guy's AC repair video on youtube

I am struggling with removing the compressor on my 1998 LC. I was able to get all three bolts out, but thing would not budge. Saw in the Toyota manual that removal of the axle is necessary; perhaps not, but I have now removed it nonetheless. I still cannot get the compressor to move. I can wiggle it slightly, but no real movement. Any suggestions or tricks to try? It's so tight that I am afraid to force it for fear of breaking something. Seems like it should come right out.

Thanks!

Have you removed the correct three bolts? Sorry for asking such a question, no offence intended. The lower front bolt can be difficult to see with the oil filter and bracket in place.

None taken! Insofar as I can tell, I have removed the correct three. But I will recheck that area to make sure. I've looked and looked and then looked some more, because it sure feels like it's still attached. I am certainly capable of struggling over something as ridiculous as that!

Thanks for the quick response!

Been a couple years since I did mine but I remember it coming out pretty easily. Truck had 300k miles with OEM compressor.

This thread was a big help. Has pictures of all the bolts:

The oil filter housing bolts are in the same area. Don't pull at things if you aren't sure you have the right ones or you'll be doing it over again to put a new filter housing gasket in. The two bolts that go through the compressor and the one in the back all are the same size bolt head. If you had to use two different size sockets, you maybe got the wrong bolts loose. Also, when the compressor is out, replace the coolant hose going from the filter housing to the block. It's really almost impossible to replace with the compressor in place.
