Gentlemen,

A carb rebuild, turned into a cylinder head rebuild, that is now turning in to an engine rebuild. I just couldn't bear to put my pristine rebuilt carb back on that filthy manifold. Then when I removed the cylinder head (a bear of a job) and saw lots of black sooty debri on the piston heads I thought I should just go whole hog and have the block rebuilt. I've attached some pictures to give you some idea of what I'm talking about

I can't afford to simply drop my rig (83 FJ60) off at a shop and have them remove, rebuild, and reinstall the engine...this would run upwards of $5,000 according to the inquiries I've made. But I can afford around $2000 to simply have the block and cylinder head rebuilt...at least I hope it won't cost more than this.

So I am planning to remove the engine myself, deliver it to a shop (Bill Lee? formerly of Bill's Toy Shop, Tucson, Arizona), have him rebuild the engine, then do the install myself.

From what I gather from reading various repair manuals I can remove the engine without removing the transmission. The Haynes Land Cruiser manual for 1968-1982 says this is not feasible, but the Haynes manual for 1980-1996 provides instructions for removing the engine without removing the transmission.

So it looks like I will be needing an engine hoist and an engine stand. Does anyone in Tucson know where I could borrow or rent these items? I could buy them at Harbor Freight but it seems a big expense for some things I will only be using once for a couple of weeks. Also, can anyone in Tucson recommend a good experienced engine rebuilder or machine shop familiar with the 2F engine.

Thanks much for any advice. I'll probably have more questions as I move along.

Checker has engine stands, and I'm sure you could have a fellow Tucson CSC guy help you out with the cherry-picker.
I have a 2F rebuild proj. coming up, so I'll be essentially doing the same thing. As far as removing the eng with the tranny and t-case, you can go either way. It may seem easier to pull the whole unit, but I don't really know if it is.

Some of the best money I ever spent was on a colapsable hoist from Harbor Freight. I use it to move all kinds of heavy chit I can't man handle by myself. Besides, my friends appreciate it too, I call them over to help lift heavy crap a whole lot less now. If you can wait a couple weeks I will have both the engine stand and hoist freed up for use as needed. The motor and trans should be going into the 60 this weekend or next then they'll be back out for a day or two for finish welding then back in permanently.

Just saw a One Ton collapsible hoist from Harbor Freight to be on sale for $100 March 4 and 5. I also know they have 2000 lb engine stands for around $100. So I will probably go this route. When done, I would be happy to lend to any cruiserhead in the area.

Any comments on the appearance of the piston heads? Is that black flakey build up normal?

Definition of Work: A time to plan your next Cruiser project and source the parts;)

You want a heavy duty engine stand, Land Cruiser motors are heavy and long!

Hard to tell from the pictures, it maybe a little excessive, what were the compression numbers? Excess carbon is mainly from burning oil, from ether the rings and/or valve stem seals.

Engine Rebuilder

Larry's engine and marine is a good shop for that motor. I know they have done 2f's before. They are a little pricy but i know most of those guys and they do top notch work. They are located around oracle and lester. The phone # is 623.5373.

I have a HF 2000# stand and Arcan folding cherry picker for loan in Tucson, for 60 days assuming they are kept inside (keep the ram on the engine hoist clean all I ask).

Damn Rick! You're right up the street (or frontage road) from my Tucson shop. I'll have to stop in and say hi next time I'm down there.

...I-10 self storage, where the tools are, I am first and river road area 16 minutes east w/o traffic

I usually try to call a lunch at La Parilla Suiza on Oracle for around noon when I'm down there. I could be persuaded to eat lunch at a more easterly location.
