Hi, I'm new to this site but have been reading information here for quite some time. I'm hoping some of the experts out there can help me with a problem on my son's 4 Runner. He has a 2005 V8 with approximately 80,000 miles on it. He took it in to a local shop that has done work on our Toyotas for years to have the timing belt changed (routine maintenance). After the mechanic changed the belt, it would not start. The belt position was checked several times. There was an error code and it did show a left bank cam position problem. Both the cam sensor and vvt assembly have been changed out with new parts but as of today, it will not start. Has anyone ever seen this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, if the truck ran fine before the belt change, it should not be your issue to resolve.

The shop should fix the issue.

It could be so many issues i.e. electrical connection damaged/not connected. Timing issue etc etc.

Just guessing, but I'd say they didn't get the belt timed correctly. If it's too far off, and the engine continues to be cranked, there is also the possibility of bent valves.

BTW, 80K is a little early to be doing the timing belt on the 2UZ-FE.

Thanks for all of your responses. Basically my son is letting the shop work through the problem since the vehicle was running fine when he brought it in. Since they've had the vehicle for 4 weeks, we're trying to research the issue on our own. I'll post a reply when the issue is resolved.

4 weeks!!!

I think I'd ask it to be towed to a Toyota dealer with an excellent service department. The shop that has it now obviously doesn't know what is wrong or how to fix it.

Ask around to find out which dealers have better service techs than others. If there is one particular tech that others have had good experience with. Call ahead and ask for that specific tech to look at it.

Get into the Copper State Cruisers clubhouse here----> AZ- Copper State Cruisers

and ask where it should go.

Good luck,

Luke

You should have them check the 36 +1 crank trigger for damage.

Looks similar to this.....

The mechanic finally took it to a dealer just up the road. Turned out it was a wire that came loose from one of the cam position switch harnesses. It started right up! Thanks for everyone's help.
