I could have sworn they were straight cut all the way. Why the hell is the 420 so much louder in 1:1 than the 465? Just a matter of better tolerances and quality control?

Age?

I don't find the NOS SM420 in my FJ40 particularly loud in 4th... course it could be the swampers talk louder :hillbilly:

decision made.

I am going with a sm465 to d300 to hybrid mini lc axle.

sm465 got it FREE (Uncle Roger)
d 300 got it Free (barter w/ friend)
rear axle 75 bucks @ junk yard
adapter $531 from AAdapters.

Don't know, I have never had a 465 apart, but the 420s I have had apart everything is kinda loose. Mine doesn't make much racket not enough to complain about.

OP good choice, you have loads of options with that setup.

Trying to determine which adapter. The 465 I have is a 35 spline and the advanced kit requires no tranny dissasembly. But it is not clockable. The novak adapter requires the install of a new tranny mainshaft but is clockable.

Is the ability to clock the d300 really worth the xtra work and money to install the main shaft ?

absolutely.

you could get a clocking ring for the 300, or drill the other adapter, but the novak one is already ready to go, and is a nice piece. Putting in a new mainshaft is easy and you end up with a shorter adapter with no spud shaft.

I am Very happy with my Dana 300 and Centered Rear Axle.. Clocked flat i have a nice Flat Belly that hangs only 1/2" below the frame rails..

I think the Sm420's are just older and not build to the same tolerances as the newer 465, thats why they are louder.. 420's are harder to find/rebuild compared to the 465

Why are 420's so much louder in 1:1 since they have the same 3rd and 4th as the 465?

Top gear is 1:1, but the 420 has a 1.71:1 and the 465 has a 1.57:1...

(snowman does not have correct data on his website/forum/thread)

A common complaint of people running a 420 vs. a 465 is the spread in the gear ratio between third gear and top gear. Many say that the 465 are easier to drive/shift and has a better ratio split, vs. the 420.

:meh:

You cannot hear any gear noise of a 420 over the one-piece Land Cruiser transfer case.....If you can, your transfer case is broke.

I really have no idea why you have found the 420 transmissions that you have operated noisy, other than obvious reasons: Worn bearings/gears/shafts/low oil levels/etc.

I have driven at least 50 different 420 transmissions between Land Cruisers and old GM trucks and not found them to be noisy. They are a heavy truck transmission, and not a car transmission.

My Atlas transfer case behind my 420 is clocked in such a way as to allow a skid plate that is completely flat and below the frame only one inch.....

you might come out better to just sell the fine spline sm465 and find one with a coarse spline output...

I don’t think so.

There are 3 options:
Replace mainshaft in transmission so output is 23 spline (novak option 2)
Replace input shaft on t-case to accept 10 spline(early 4wd tranny (novak option 1)
Use advance adapters spud shaft.

If you replace your output, your transmission is now compatible with all sorts of t-cases

my bad, for some reason i thought the sm465 w/coarse spline output would work without having to modify the dana300 input.... but don't you think it could be bad for your soul to put a jeep t-case into a Land Cruiser?

I thought of thet but I desire the strength of this combo and it is helping me build up to future mods.

picked up my 35 spline 465 and my d300 today. I will order a 4:1 for the 300 twin stick it and 32 spline outputs aftr the first of the year when uncle sam gives back what he stole from me. and order my adapter then also.

What should I do for a vss?

and id it really needed?

The motor is a 93 tbi with a pcm from a 88 truck w/ a sm465.
