I'm thinking pinion too..... It does it when you rotate by hand also. clunks as it's going around and then gets caught at a point, you then have to back it off and do it again to get past the 'sticky' point.

There have been no axle leaks, and all was running fine until last time a drove it.

I think i might just send it into the mechanics... it needs a roadworthy anyway.

drain and pull the rear cover and take a look inside.
it could be something simple like a cracked center pin, a nut came loose or something else that you can do yourself.
curious, did you remove the axle at all when you did the brakes? rear axle seals? is the rear FF or SF?
on the other hand it could be a PITA and $$$$. they are very simple to work on.

Sounds exactly like the diff in my old Dyna and I think it was very similar to a landcruiser diff. It use to do some funny things in reverse

Thanks, i'll do that.
I never removed anything to do with the driveline, just the brakes...
I think it's FF (what's the difference?"
and what's a PITA???

Thanks

SF the axle end sits flush with the inside flat of the rim
FF the axle sits 6" outside the inside flat of the rim.
Pain In The Ass (PITA)

if you never removed anything other than the brakes then this advice is unlikey your problem.
but
you do have a rear diff problem so pull and inspect just for the fun of it.

WELL, it's fixed. Was two teeth missing from the crown wheel.... and the rest of it was very worn out. Got a secondhand one in there for $600 all up.

Thanks for your help

I didnt mind paying it, i sent the car in on monday, got it out and 100% on tuesday.....
