Gday all,

After finally getting my '86 BJ74 on the road after replacing the brakes, i drove it for a few hours during the day. Then it started making a horrible noise and vibration upon acceleration. I pulled into home quickly, but couldn't find anything obvious. I checked all the oils (transfer took 1ltr to fill.....) and tried it again to no avail. Without going fast, it goes along fine but seems to "grab" every now and then makes a loud clunking noise. I rolled it backwards and looked underneath to see the rear driveshaft "grab" and clunk... it sounds like it's the rear diff.
I drained the diff, but there was nothing in there.

Any help appreciated.....

Thanks

Check to see if the flange/input shaft rear differential has side play.

What he said...

Check that pinion. Put it up in the air, in neutral, and check for play at the pinion shaft. Don't drive it until you have it sorted out as a loose pinion will destroy the rear end.

PS: try and NOT be the boy who cried wolf! A descriptive title really helps... a serious problem yours is not. It's likely a lack of proper repair procedure or a lack of maintenance.

Thanks guys, can you give me some more details on how to check the pinion....

When I had a bad pinion bearing/wear I jacked the rear wheels off the ground, gearbox in neutral. I checked for up down, and side to side movement in the piion ( should be virtually none) and checked rotational movement in the pinion.

Mine had a little up down and sideways, HEAPS of rotation movement - stuffed. Only issue when driving was a vibration/noise on deccel.

On another topic, did you sort your gearbox popping from 5th? Mine still does, so i've got another gearbox coming for it.

there's pretty much no pinion movement at all..... got no idea...

And no, i havn't sorted the 5th gear problem, still havnt had a look. Where are you getting a gearbox from??

Yes, all i found was one of the little handbrake wires in the assembly had fallen off it's centre holder thing and it was worn out.... not enough to make all this noise surely....

I've seen this quite a few times in Cruisers... I keep the cables and pivots in stock.

Pivots??? you mean the thing in the middle that the cable sits on?

Getting it privately from nsw. I know of another box at a local wreckers, unknown condition though

When my handbrake parts fell to bits inside the drum ,it was more of a high pitched screaming that occasionally went quiet.

Well, i replaced the little worn cables and checked all the brake parts.... all fine,
has not fixed the problem.........
I was rolling down the driveway today testing it and it locked the back wheels and skidded to a stop, released again after reversing.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????

ummm, curious, dropping the rear shaft will do what exactly?
the rear diff still turns,if it turns it can lock up. not being an ass here just curious...

put it on a lift, fire it up and rotate by hand feel for any bindage.

might be dumb question, have yo had a rear axle leak recently? if so did you change out the shoes AND turn the drum?
did you check for anything still on the new shoes?

if it is diff related you shoudl be able to feel the restiction by hand turning.

Exactly, if it still locks up, points towards a diff problem, if it does not lock up points towards a possible problem before the diff, thats if it is not somehow masked by now driving the front diff.

Does the problem still happen in 4wd?

Sounds like a badly worn pinion to me
