Ok folks, I need a repair diagnosis!!

I left this morning to drive to the airport (2.5hrs) and about 10 minutes away from my destination I got really back clunking noises at every bump, sounded like the axle was about to drop off into the toronto potholes. Got to the Park N Fly lot and stuck my head under, and as I suspected, the "tube" part of the frame where the rear shocks mount is busted off both sides, currently resting against the bottom of the body (doh!)

I have about 250km to drive home when I return from my trip, (I'm going to be in Victoria BC). It will be all highway driving so shouldn't be that bumpy. My problem is I have about 3 days when I get back, and then I'm off on a 1500km trip - NEED to fix it before I leave for that!!!!

I am planning on welding both ends but wont be able to weld the top as its too close to the body... Any suggestions???

I dont need to make it a permanent repair, but it will need to last 1500km, and more before I can do a frame off to repair it properly...

Damn glad that Vancouver has free wireless in the airport!!!

Thanks!

Bruce

Duh... It's my '84 Bj60 - frame is not great but its the tube that broke, not the frame. I think there is enough meat there to weld to...

just got done repairing the same problem tube rotted off the frame we just ran a solid pipe through the frame and welded it then welded some new shock mounts to the pipe it won't be a restored vehicle ever so we were not to concerned about how good it looks

Sounds like a bit more than a 20 minute weld up job.... What did you use for the shock mounts? I do have some pipe at home, not sure what size though...

Drive a pipe through the holes as others have said. Cut the old mounts off the old crossmember and weld them to the pipe. That's what I did on mine and it was good for a while until I ditched the whole frame for a nice rust free one!

If the old pipe rusted off there isn't going to be enough solid metal to weld to anyways.

rear cross member

i had one made my Solid Rock Offroad...
looks like this:

worked great, and either bolted or welded in (your choice)

we just welded bolts to the tubing for the shock mounts we'll be trying them out today got a trail ride planned

You could always add some gussets from the tube to the frame to spread out the load. Little bit of grinder work should be less than an hour.
