I have a HZJ76 I bought about a year ago in West Africa, so its history is largely unknown. It has been running well, but the other day I had a semi-professional mechanic change the timing belt for me as a routine exercise in engine damage prevention. Later that day, I noticed that a strange noise had appeared. Here is a video link: It sounds like a valve/suction noise, coming from the head area. I assumed maybe the timing was off by a tooth or something, so I pulled the timing cover, but all the timing marks line are lined up perfectly. I swapped the old belt back on, and the noise persists. I reinstalled the new belt, made sure the timing marks are all set perfectly, and the sound is still there. I am continuing to drive it as the performance does not seem to have changed. It isn't smoking or running roughly, just loud. The guy performed the belt change at my house, and as far as I know he didn't mess with anything else while he had the hood up. Is it possible the timing marks are off somehow, and I need to adjust it one tooth one way or the other to make the noise go away? Like I said, I don't know much about the history of the engine before I bought the car a year ago. Or is this a different issue that coincedently showed up at the same time as the belt change? I have mechanical experience, but am somewhat new to diesels. Any suggestions are appreciated.
