It has been a while since I have been on the club thread and coming up on over a year since my FJ40 has run. You may recall my rig is the smurf blue FJ40 that originally was owned by Andy Zook. I love the truck and really enjoyed becoming a part of the LC community in the Northeast. Unfortunately the truck stopped running about a year ago and when I tried to take it to OTRAMM I learned they are no longer working on vintage vehicles. Since then I have called and spoken to 10-15 different vintage mechanic and no one is willing to work on the FJ40. I understand that most in this group are qualified to fix and repair most things themselves but I unfortunately am not that guy (hopefully one day). My only solution seems to be Land Cruiser Heaven but I have found the reviews on their work to be mixed at best. At this point it seems like the best route compared to the truck just decaying in my garage. I am reaching out to see if anyone has other suggestions before I move forward? The original issue seems to be electrical but that is my best guess......the truck hasnt run in 12 months so I also think the entire engine needs a complete overahaul with seals and fluids etc. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Where are you located and what happened when ot stopped running? Did it just not start one day or did it shut off on its own? I wouldn't jump to a whole engine overhaul after sitting, I'd just worry about an oil change and carburetor cleaning.

Not sure if they work on older stuff, or if you have already given them a call, but NOVA Speed did great work on my 100 series. The 40 is obviously a little older, but if they can't help maybe they know someone who can. They're Land Cruiser guys so I think they could pull through.

I don't know if they have any Land Cruiser experience, but years ago Ridgeway Auto in Catonsville was willing to work on old cars and did great work for me. Might be worth a call or visit.

Have you tried Extra Mile Performance in Odenton? I know Jeremy (owner/tech) put a replacement engine in a 60 last year.

+1 for NOVA Speed Shop, they just did some work on my 60, the guy I spoke to in the office also has a 60 and in the shop were several old muscle cars, so they're not afraid of classic cars/carburetors. Also several nice Japanese diesel Land Cruisers in the parking lot, they work on all kinds of stuff.

What engine / drivetrain? Will it turn over and just not start or will it not spin? Truck stored outside or inside? Does it leak oil/fluids? Any milkshake in either the rad or oil pan? If it’s not leaking profusely, and oil isn’t mixing with water, and if it turns over and makes compression, it’ll run with fuel/spark in the proper proportions.

We’d be more than happy to help if you got it up to South Jersey/Philly…….Between Dad and I we have lots of knowledge & resources.

What year? I also would not assume an engine rebuild. The 1F and 2F engines are pretty bullet proof and too dumb to die. The electrical is very basic. Because you suspect electrical issues, breakout or buy a multimeter (less than $30 and an invaluable tool). If nothing happens when you turn the key, check the following:
  1. Battery fully charged (12+ volts between the Pos and Neg terminals)?
  2. Condition of fusible link (if it has one installed)?
  3. Verify that the Neg ground cable is firmly connected to the frame by visual confirmation and wiggling the connection at both ends or using the Ohm setting on the multimeter to check for continuity between the Neg battery post and the frame.
  4. Check all wire connections to/from the Alternator and to/from the coil, tighten as needed.
  5. Remove air cleaner and spray Starter Fluid into the carb
  6. Try to crank it over and then tell us what happens, e.g. - nothing, solenoid only clicks, starter cranks engine but engine won't kickover, engine fires but won't run, etc.
Good Luck!

Your truck has a better chance of sitting there decaying than it does having Land Cruiser Heaven touching it based on the experiences I've heard about

Located in Ellicott City, MD. When it stopped running I was in the middle of jumping it and it was trying to turn over and then it just died. Have not been able to get it to turn over since.

Thank you for the recommendation.

1974 with F1/2 engine and trollhole carb. No leaks anywhere.

If it just stopped, the starter might have jammed the bendex to the flywheel, tap it with a hammer and see if it turns over with a jump starter again?

You can spray some starter fluid in the carb or dribble some fresh gas in and see if it fires off

If you were jumping it and it went dead, check ignition and fuses.

The first thing I did was put in a brand new starter.
I’d make sure that the starter was retraced/not jammed or bound up. Remove if needed. Then try and turn the engine over with a breaker bar or similar by hand. Pull plugs if needed to make that easier. Go around at least 1 full revolution, feel for if it changes (harder or easier) in any places. If it moves freely, put starter back in, try spinning motor with starter. Then if that works, start checking electrical and fuel.

If it does not turn over with starter and plugs pulled, next step in my mind is pull valve covers and start looking for valve train bound up, broken pushrod, dropped valves. You could also drain oil and make sure it’s not metallic, no chunks come out, etc. that would indicate bearing or other failures.
