I'm trying to choose between 3 different winches a M8000 8274 and a 9.5ti. My question to you is what would you go with? It will be mounted on the front of an 89 toyota pickup 22re 4 speed auto tranny. I have no radiator fan shroud right now and I'm worried that the 8274 will block air flow. The two bumpers I have in mind is either a plated bumper or a tube bumper from marlin crawler. The plate bumper would be like an arb style and wouldn't block to much air flow. So to you guys which one do you think is best? I can get all 3 of theese for about 600 each. I've been offered a 9.5ti for 600 (It's been inside for all it's life) and I can get a new m8000 from amazon for about 550 and the 8274 would be bought from craigslist rebuilt and upgraded with a faster motor and new cable.

I currently own two of those three (M8000 and 8274). The M8000 is plenty of winch for a Hilux/mini truck and will be a lot easier to mount. The 8274 is a fantastic winch and my favorite ever, but it takes up a lot of real estate, tall and deep - it won't fit in any old winch bumper, it has to be one made special for the 8274. Unless you just have to be the coolest '89 Hilux ever, save yourself some grief and go with the M8000.

It's not a super cool truck for off roading. It's my DD and is about a 20% off roading 80% pavement. But I also do go wheeling with another guy who's in a 70's ford highboy. I know I could snatch block to help get him unstuck but he also has his own winch.

I prefer the 8274 its easier to get to in the jungle everyone with a low mount has to remove the bumper then remove the winch just to look at it. 8274 is also higher out of the mud especially the precious motor.

The 8274 like most setups you can change a motor in 25-30 mins. For mine i cut all the 6-8 cable ties to the grill (no screws all removed) lift off to give me hand room. Swap motor and put grill back attach cable ties and on your way. Has this been done - yes several times in the jungle including a brake rebuild.

FYI mine is mounted on a 1/4" L-plate which is bolted to the chassis and the bar work bolted to the side of the winch plate.

If yours is a lightweight Yota there is no way it can full pull a ford without anchoring unless he is lightly stuck.

Hi all,

Any of those three electric winches would work fine on your Toyota p/u.

The M8274 would surely be the #1 choice if you were using the rig for hard 4 wheeling. It is strong, reliable, fast, and easily serviced.

The M8000 and 9500i are both strong and reliable winches as well. I think I'd go with a new M8000 vs. an used 9500i, but either should be fine.

Regards,

Alan

Well it's my everyday driver so it's not a heavy wheeler and it's not my plan to wheel it hard. Cicak, does the 8274 block an air for cooling? I don't have that much room for something that is 2 feet tall (correct?) unless I block some air to my rad and I don't have a fan shroud. Or does that no even matter? And that's what I'm thinking of going with the m8000 since it'd be new. Anyone else have input that has mounted one of these on their pickup?

This vehicle is used as a daily driver along with my other offroader. Yes you need a shroud on the fan. It blocks a little air. The M8000 will fit in a pickup they put these and the 9000's in Hilux's and other pickups here. If you go out your gotta remember if you put the winch throught eh mud it needs to be checked for water and mud ingress. Weve seen winches used once and fill up with mud and water straight out of the ARB/WARN shop.

I'm thinking of going with a m8000. My plan is later on down the road to go with double winches. And I would be keeping it covered and making sure to get water out. Thank you all for your help

I have an M8000 i got for a steal from a local club member. It worked great and was easy to wire and mount. Much cheaper than the 8274's that were available at the time. It did its job. I winched 10 people up an obstacle in Moab last year.
