94' FJZ80: I dropped the transmission pan to clean the magnets as part of PM. All the magnets were quite furry, which doesn't concern me too much, but one magnet captured a large chunk of ferrous metal. It was part of a circle about the same diameter as the tranny drain plug. It sort of looks a snap ring to me. Any ideas of what this part could be?

I thought more about this and I don't think this was spring steel (I was able to easily bend and break it) so it probably wasn't a snap ring, but a washer of some sort?

I was thinking a piece of a stripped thread from a drain plug.

It's not a snap ring of any type.

But it IS, small, inconsequential and should be given no further thought. ;)

Thanks for the replies.

I wondered that too, or maybe it is the remnants of an old crush washer for the drain plug. Either way I can sleep better at night :)

It could be swarf leftover from machining when the tranny was new. Have you ever opened up the trans pan prior to this?

I just purchased the LC a month ago so this is the first time I've dropped the pan. Not sure if the magnets have been cleaned by a PO or not.

Judging by the amount, I'd say probably not. Also, IF the FIPG looked like that in the pic above, it probably was original. In any case, nothing to be concerned with.

The pan had a black gasket instead of FIPG so I know it has been dropped before, but in 25 years and 9 POs (according to CARFAX) who knows what has been done o_O

On advice from another forum member I'm adding an inline Magnefine filter and some stronger neodymium magnets while I have the pan dropped. No doubt this small amount of PM is much cheaper than a new transmission.
