So I purchased a running partially completed 1979 FJ40. It had been through two owners who worked on it before me. What I’m trying to problem solve is the steering system. The power steering works, but the steering travel is limited. Turning to the left is okay, but there’s very little travel to the right.
My mechanic seems to think the problem is the steering box itself. But we aren’t sure if it’s a faulty box or if it’s just not the right box for the application. Previous owner says he installed the power steering using a 4Runner steering box, and GM power steering pump but he’s not sure since it was several years ago.
I’m wondering if the whole install is just wrong and I need to scrap it and start over.

If it gets to full stop on the axle stops going left and does not going right, try shortening the relay rod from box to pivot. You can do this with the adjustments at both ends, don't do it all at one end.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn’t realize a 4Runner box and a mini truck box were the same. That helps me figure out what I’m looking at.
Looks like I’ve got a few things to play with.

Unless you feel like doing the job twice, you’re going to need to replace that bent drag link first.

And unless there’s a gusset hiding behind your pitman arm, you should consider adding one between the horizontal plate the the steering box is mounted to and the vertical plate that goes down to the frame. Both sides.

It looks like the bracket that JTO sells. Looks like the tow is way out maybe also. Missing cotter pin in center pivot.
