Might make an offer on these two winches - believe one is an 8274, not sure though, this will be my first winch. He has these two for sale for $300.

The one with the plate (8274?) has the cracked housing.

What do you guys think? Trying to identify and get some opinions.

Thanks,
JP

one on left is an 8274, might find a top case for about $80. the one on the right is called a bellevue, bellview, etc. model 5687. they came in at 6k and 8k ratings. they are cool but are only power in. it also should have cable controls with it to control it. the only way to hold a load with it is to hold the brake. Both are good winches though.

Thank you for the reply and your help identifying the winches. I was excited to find out about the 8274. Got some more info from the owner - the other is an early Warn winch, it is a model 5721 rated at 8000#.

He says the 5721 works fine. The 8274 obviously needs a new top case, but he says it is not operational. I asked about remotes and he does not have them for either winch:frown:

I am going to go ahead and pick them up. Plan on rebuilding both. After much research, I want to do the "tried and true" 8274 on our 80 series and maybe hang onto the other as a rear mount or possibly sell down the road.

Thanks again for the info. I will post up again as the rebuild process begins, but excited about getting my first winch(es):)

Bailed out on the 8274 and 5721

Thanks for all the info guys. After looking at some of the prices on replacement parts (ie upper case, remote, etc) started to realize refurbishing just one of the winches was going to get rather expensive considering the initial purchase price of $300.

As much as I wanted to put the 8274 on the front of the 80 series, had to call him and bail on the deal. If they could be had for $100 or so, maybe.

Will pick up a M12000 on Friday off of CL and will jump on the bandwagon with the other Warn 12k 80 series owners;)

I compared line speeds and speeds when doubled (8274) and amp draw and both were comparable (from my interpretation of data) Really wanted the 8274 just to be different, but I think there is something to be said for the M12k and its simpler install into the ARB and maybe it's more fitting for the 80 platform as well.

Thanks again for the info and sources. Good to know for parts - just in case.

I have a top case for a 8274. I replaced mine due to the gear in it loosing its bushinging and eating up the rod. Warn doesn't just sell the case, you have to get all of it with the gear and rod because its "pressed" in. Its really just dimpled and can be pressed back in. New is almost $300. I'll sell mine for $150. Anything less and I'll just keep it for a spare. Its media blasted. You might want to see if someone can weld it up for you.

m12000 is a great winch. 8274 is a well proven and time tested winch. I think that they get a bit overated. I have owned an 8274 and 2 XD9000I. Sold the 8274 many years ago and have owned one of my XD9000I since 1994. I love them and have never looked back. Alot more compa

Funny, I pulled a functioning XD9000i in favor of a 20 year old 8274...

They're both great winches, to each his own.
