i recently purchased a frame for either a fj60 or fj62 with a 3f engine attached to a 5 speed trans. and running gear for a v8 rebuild project that i'm starting. I was told it was an 1989 model fj62 but all information i can gather states that these were only available with an auto trans. yet mine had what i assume is a h55f that has no id plate or markings. anyone have any idea how to identify what trans I have so I can get the correct bellhousing, clutch kit..

There is a frame # stamped onto the frame on the front right side. The number will either start FJ60xxxxxxxx or FJ62xxxxxxxxx then you will know what you have (Frame wise anyway).

I believe 62's are fully boxed. 60's not.
this is the first toyota that I have attemped to use. I am planning on using the land cruiser frame, axles, trans, and t-case with a ranger 2 speed torque splitter bolted behind a 350 chevy and sitting a s-15 body on top.

as for clutch and bellhousing, if your using the V-8 and ranger torque splitter, just use what will work between them????? or am I missing something???

doesn't it go V-8, clutch, bellhousing, ranger? and the ranger is the adaptor between GM bellhousing and Toyota trans?

Howdy! Yup. That's the way I am setup. I started with a 350 that had been mated to an automatic, so I had to get a flywheel. I also used the newer aluminum bell housing, although I still have a cast iron truck bell. It is just a lot easier. Centerforce makes a setup that fits the Chevy parts, but has the slightly shorter throw for the Cruiser hydraulic clutch system. My Ranger is all Chevy on the front, and fits right onto my H42 at the rear. The Ranger is syncronized, so it is a live gear splitter. I really like it. Other than the extra 8 inches of driveline space required, there is really only one negative thing about this setup. Even with fresh bearings, syncros, etc. everywhere, it will always shift like a big truck. Take your time shifting, and it works great. Get in a big hurry, and it snags and drags between gears. After 3 different transmissions, I finally figured it out. When shifting gears, the syncros have to speed up/slow down the front (input) part of the transmission. With the extra weight and resistance of the Ranger, it makes a lot more work for the syncros. It's not a bad thing, just different. Ya can't shift it like your Grandma's Corvette!! Double clutching helps, sometimes, but just taking your time is about the easiest way to live with it. I really like having 8 gears in Hi range, and 8 gears in Low range. Now, when I get my Toybox installed, I'm really gunna have fun. John

Eeek.... What's wrong with the 60 body? Or cut it back to make a pickup version? Or mount up a fj40 or 45 on the frame.
