Okay, driving home from work today about 65 mph, suddenly there's a funny swerve and then grinding....lots of grinding. Pulled right over and got out to take a look, there's smoke metal shavings on the passenger side front wheel. An inspection underneath shows the CV axle pulled out of the (hub/brake holder/dohicky)...I'm not sure what that part's called.

#1. What the heck would have caused this? There were no signs, no noises, no broken boot, etc. Did something else that I can't see yet break and let that move over enough to cause the disconnect?

#2. I'm sure I need to replace that axle, given the shavings I saw the teeth have to be gone. Am I going to most likely have to replace the piece it slides into there?

#3. Oh, I limped it home, as I got close the brakes were REALLY soft...think that's just grease on the rotor or did I break something else? Didn't see any leaking brake fluid.

#4. What else do I need to buy and replace while it's apart? Axle seals, bearings, etc... I'll like do the brakes while it's apart.

#5. I'm handy, have a lift, but I'm new to 100 Series work. Will I be able to leave for Moab in a few days as planned or am I screwed!?

The axle c clip has come loose. Pop off dust cap and you will see it. Probably need new cv shaft and part of hub assembly

Just from yesterday, this is becoming a thing . . .

Thanks, TM...missed that one. Watching this vid now.

We'll be seeing more and more of these snap rings (C-clip) pop off, as the fleet ages.
This "popping off"does not happen in a properly maintain series 100 period! No matter how many miles on the clock!

In OTRAMM video above. He doesn't show he's installed a new snap ring. Nor did he show setting snap ring gap. Surely because he'll pulling again tomorrow when he gets parts, to install new hub flange gasket, new cone washers, washers, nuts and proper sized (thickness) snap ring.
