80 is at the glass shop and just got called that I have a few rust issues that are not bad but will get worse. Has anyone run into this as well and can give me an idea on what it takes to fix and a rough cost. I realize it is hard to predict price without a photo but I am 30 miles away and freaking out over this. They close in an hour and I have to get kids from school and can't get there today but have to let glass guy know something.
Any help is appreciated. windshield with a d.

I usually replace my own windshields for this exact reason. At least if I take it out myself, I can see what needs to be done, and just do it. That being said... its really hard to predict what it will cost. If ya trust the guys at the place doing the windshield, then letthem do it... if not, I'd just tell them to put the new glass in, and plan on redoing the entire job myself.

Just sand it down and re coat with touch up paint. It will not be visible under the window gasket.

I had a paint/body guy go look at it this evening and will call me tomorrow. The good thing (if there is one) is my hood and roof need respray and clear coat, so he will price that too. Wife seems ok with it. hehehehehe. Might be a secret door to get the hood and roof done. Glass guy said from the little rust spots that it looked like windshield has been replaced more than once. I am the original owner and it only has been replaced once so, sort of good they are doing it to prevent anymore rust rot. Both of these companies are top notch, independent and no BS so I feel comfortable.

That sounds like a plan to me...:idea:

Mike today was truly a cluster F. :( I was dreading that phone call. Hope it pans out and she goes for it ;)

Did mine myself last year after getting a call from the glass shop as well. I was lucky enough that a friend was parting out an HDJ81 that I was able to scavenge parts from. My rust was pretty bad though.

@canman - nice work!

@BayouFJ80 - it sounds like your problem is t that bad.
You should ask for someone to send you some pictures.
They should be able to grind, touch up and paint.

I have some nasty rust issues on the front window and the proper fix is the same as what canman did.....section the rust off and weld a new piece. For me it's on the upper side, do its a bit of a pain and not too cheap to fix.

Good luck to you!

Thank you. I appreciate it.

Yeah, that was ugly :crybaby::(

Hope yours is nowhere near as bad, because your winters are nowhere near as bad.

Good save, canman!

Heh.... If ya think that looks bad, you ain't seen s***...

My 44runner was hella worse... Like, required welding worse.... :)

Mine looked like that when I got a call from the glass shop, I was lucky enough to get it fixed by my local mechanic

Looks like welding to me...

But maybe you welded in an entire new windshield surround?;)

You're an honest man.;)

Rust, this is one of the reasons i waited when looking to buy my land cruiser, and bought a truck that spent it's whole life in rust free southern California.

When i use to own my own shop, and customers would talk to me about rust repairs. They would ask me how long can i get by before i have to spend money on repairing the rust. I use to tell them that rust never sleeps, never takes a day off, It's sole purpose in life is to eat the metal on their car. So the longer they waited, the more the rust would eat, and the more it would cost to repair.

They would then ask if there was anything special they could do to prevent rust. I told them that if they drove anywhere were salt was being used to clear snow and ice from the roads, to buy two cars. One to use in the winter, and be eaten by rust, and the other to only be driven in the summer so it wouldn't get rust. Funny thing is, when i told them that, they all laughed, and though i was joking, i wasn't joking.

I picked my 80 today. This is my 3rd windshield. My 2nd replacement is what messed me up. They did a crappy job and did not even prime it. I learned a lot with this recent install. BTW, this truck was bought new in Plano TX and has lived in south La most of its life. The northern guys have salt, down here we have lots of rain and high humidity. My rust spots were repaired by a pro that knows what he is doing and did not cut corners. I am going to take my snorkel off and check those holes cause I installed it and curious what it looks like after 2 years. I intend very much on keeping this truck. It is my DD and has served me well.

* When I say prime it, from what I learned this week, there is a window primer that needs to be applied that the glue adheres to. This guy does a lot of classic cars and is old school so I finally found someone that knows what they are doing. We H8mud, he H8srust!

If you don't mind me asking BayouFJ80, who is the guy you used? I need to replace my front windshield and the last guy I took it to wasn't great to deal with.

I had a similar issue and had rust all along the bottom edge of the windshield frame. The glass company would not put a new windshield in due to liability so I had no choice (well, I could have driven around without a windshield I guess). It ended up costing close to $1000 by the time I was done between the removal of the rusted areas, new sections welded in, prime, paint and then installing the new glass. Good as new now but expensive. Serves me right for buying a Midwest LC. Rust never sleeps...
