Helping my brother out with his rusty 04 Tacoma frame. Got it mostly stripped down and will start cutting out rust soon. Hoping to start welding the weekend of June 21-23rd. I would appreciate if anyone with some more experience could come supervise and give me some tips when starting to make sure I'm getting good penetration. @matzell @Toyodajunkie or others? Also hecklers always welcome. Will provide a banquet of course ;) thinking saturday or Sunday afternoon whichever is better.

Have a father day fishing/camping trip with my boys that weekend. But can swing by this weekend or anytime that week if working on it in the evening.

What your plan for repair? Crossmembers look toasted and see one small section on the frame where it turns up. Hard to see the leaf mounts.

Can you post pics of the ares you plan to repair? Also you will need some 1/8 plate to cut patterns out for the patch.

Might check these people out for patches.

Forward spring mounts are toast and the rears are pretty bad as well. Ive got the auto rust safety caps with the spring mount attached for the front sections and for the rears I have the caps, rear leaf spring mounts (not yet attached), and frame supports. I would also like to patch the body mounts near the forward leaf spring attachments, the crossmembers, and a couple other small holes that are around. I can post good pictures up later of the problem areas. @Toyodajunkie June 19th would work in the evening as I have off that day and should have at least one side fully ready to start welding. @matzell regarding the 1/8 plate are you saying to use that to help cut the exact pattern (similar to a cardboard template) or using 1/8 for the patches themselves on smaller areas?? My plan as of now is to keep the rear bumper/tow bar attached when I weld the front caps and then removing it to do the rear just so I have as much bracing as to not warp the frame.

Use the 1/8 to patch. card board to make a pattern. It will be about the right thickness as the frame. 11g works as well. Almost better to cut out the rust and plate it rather than patch a hole. You can weld both sides and it overlaps. you will be able to tell that it is patched, but up to you... Turn your welder up too, some of the welds you have posted do not look hot enough. Look inside the cover on the welder and it should show you the heat settings and wire speed.

Ok thanks. Yeah the caps are 11g and I will plan to get a sheet of 1/8. Yeah I agree about the welds thats why I would like some help making sure im running it hot enough with good penetration at least to start so I know what to look for a what to grind down and redo when its not enough. Definitely my largest and most important project.

This would be so much easier!

Just cut off the rear frame and start fresh. Would probably be easier and then put on a flat bed.

Any advice on replacing these gas/evap hoses? My plan was just to go to advanced w them and match them up.

With all that rust I'd try not to touch as much as you can. The sender on a tank can snap and mean replacing the whole tank if they get too corroded.

Watch wes work on youtube has a video about replacing a gas tank and filler. Hes in IL though so serious rust there

Walk away! Haha

Toyota only on that stuff. Some like 10mm.$$$

As said, do not touch it, do not think about touching it. Do not eat the apple.

I’m with rob. If you don’t absolutely need to replace then just let them be. Otherwise Toyota parts only. Napa/advance and so on don’t normally carry metric size hoses and that is what I would use since it’s gas related.
