Or HAMOM as we say.

We kick this year off by doing something a little different. As most of you know October thru March we have a drawing for Help A Member Of the Month.

What we will do differently for October HAMOM.

There are at least 5 members who need transfer cases rebuilt. So instead of HAMOM we will be having a Transfer Case rebuild class in October. Taught by yours truely.;) This class will be held at Alans shop. What we will do is completely rebuild everyones t-case who wants it done with me helping and instructing you. This class will be for the 3 and 4 speed single piece cases. It will require you have already removed the T-case. It will require you to buy a transfer case rebuild kit complete as we will rebuild the whole thing. Trust me it is well worth the expense. This should be done every 75k.

For those of you who would like to attend this class post up below and whether you have already a rebuild kit. If there is enough people who need the kits it is possible we might be able to do a group buy through Ralph Hayes Toyota or Kurt with Cruiseroutfitters.




A little explanation of HAMOM.

Let the person who gets drawn pick a date that works best for them and other members who want to come help.

Couple of rules.

1. Hospitality shall be provided to those members who come to help out. Which means drinks. (Water and what ever else you think we might like ). Food: If it's a big project (more than 4 hrs) then a meal shall be provided. We are not talking anything fancy but something simple and cost effective.(the goal is to work on your cruiser not baking a cake )

2. You have to provide two weeks before the date a list of things that you need help on. (So members can get together and decide on what tools are needed and how hard the task is.) You need to arange to have all parts nessessary to do the job. If you don't know what you need I'm sure all of us can help you figure it out and find the most economical solution. We will help with tools if needed (especially the specialty ones).

3. You actually help in the work being done, doing the messy jobs (or making sure JP is around to do them for you ).

4. If you cannot do it in the month you are chosen then you can try to swap your date with someone else or go to the back of the line.

5. The most important rule. Learn. Most members are not going to take time out of there busy schedule to do the work without you learning how to do it the next time and being able to teach someone else. The whole point of this is to get club members more knowledgeable and comfortable about working on their vehicles.

6. All members are invited to these events. Even if you have no idea where the engine is or how to check you oil level you are welcome to come and learn. But you must show an interest in learning.

7. There will be no other work to be performed on any other members cruiser who attends unless the person chosen that month says it's okay. We are here for them and to learn.

8. There is no warranty on the work performed. If something gets screwed up, well, it get's screwed up. None of us have degrees in fixing Cruisers but I can tell you that there is a lot, I mean a lot of knowledge about cruisers I have seen in our club.

9. Have fun.


What's game? I'd say anything as long as it involves your vehicle and it's something you and others can learn about it. It could be something as simple as rotating tires or an oil change or spark plugs to something like a head gasket or a new clutch or rebuilding the hubs. All Land Cruisers are game from a FJ25 to a Lexus. If we don't have the knowledge to fix it or need some advice I'm sure the professionals at Ralph Hayes Toyota will be willing to give us some advice. Just remember if it's a big job and takes a long time you might want to give us a long time to get ready. And yes there are going to be jobs that even we aren't going to be able to do.


For those of you who would like to participate just PM me or e-mail me ( marshall@828rugs.com ). I'll put everyone in a pot and draw a name and assign you a month. Then it's up to you to work out a date for club members to help. Either on our club forum on IH8MUD.com or you can e-mail me and I'll help get the club members together to work out a date that works for you and them as well as notify them of what you need done. (some of us are not web savy and I don't want to leave anyone out.)

I'll draw names the first of the month. The club meetings might be a good time to do this. I'll draw one name for the November HAMOM at the October monthly meeting. This way we always try to give members a two month buffer to work out dates and such.
 
Hey Marshal, I've done a split case before and if I can make it would be willing to help. Also, I have a couple of gaskets I'll send over that maybe someone could use.
 
Richard we start new so even past HAMOM winners are in.

John we will need all the help we can get. I actually have a split case that is in pieces. It would make a good training aid for those who want to try to rebuild one without screwing theirs up.
 
Awesome I have lots of good things to do on my cruiser still. I could fill 2 or 3 HAMOM's

Hope to be able to make the trek to this one... not rebuilding mine, but might want to take a crack at a "trainer" case.

What are the symptions that a T-Case needs rebuilding?
 
Lots of things. Oil leaking from parking brake due to bad rear output bearing, Hole in bottom of case due to lack of oil (thats my 55), loud whine excessive play ing gears. Trouble shifting from 2wd to 4wd. T-case pumping oil into the transmission. Silverish oil, chunks of metal on drain plug magnet. General rule of thumb is to rebuild every 75k and at least every 100k.

In my case on the 55 the input seal went bad causeing all the oil to be pumped out of the case into the tranny eventually putting excessive wear on the idler gear roller bearings causing the idler gear to become out of alignment and breaking a tooth off and throwing it through the bottom of the case thus draining all the oil out but as usually the PO still drove it and eventually wore the gears completly out. The amazing thing is it still worked but it sounded like it was not happy in a big way.
 
Very helpful. I changed the oil this weekend. Had a little bit of "stuff" on the drain plug. Enough to notice, but not a ton. Have no idea how many miles on it... could be a ton but I don't have any other symptoms.

Has a date been set for this? Definitely going to try to make it.

not yet. I'd thought I would get Chuck, Alan, and Rick to chime in on a good date for them. If we can rebuild 4 or 5 cases in a day we are in good shape.
 
Heck yeah I'm in....I just ordered the idler shaft bearings, and washers last weeek. I'll look at the calender tomorrow and see what it looks like.

Since I do not have any football issues:flipoff2: any date can work for me so whatever Rick or Chuck want to do is good with me.:grinpimp:
 
I've got commitments the first two weekends in october and the 3rd weekend is a football game. My parts came in today to finish my tcase. If all goes well and I can get a hand from JP and if Marshall(or anyone) wants to stop by next week I'll be puttin it back together in the evenings. I may be able to get my parts tomorrow afternoon if I can get there before 6. Got the itch bad....gonna buy the attachment for my rotozip so I can grind out the inside of my axle. I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel!!
 
Congrats, Chuck. Good luck with the final stretch!

Hopefully your 40 will be ready by the North Meets South at Uwharrie in December.
 
Transcase Rebuild Party

:confused: Hey,a member told me about this thing and I would like to attend and get someone to help with my T-case.I live Outside of Charlotte,NC.I am not a member of this Cruiser outfit but I would like to meet and greet other Cruiserheads.I am fixin to buy a complete rebuild kit for my case,it was leaking from the parking brake, maybe a speedy-sleeve if I need to.I'm doing a V-8 /Turbo400 conversion,so my setup is a little different.Can somebody help me ? I can bring party favors,like wings,I work in a restaurant.
 
I would like to participate if the timing is right, have you guys picked a weekend yet? I'll probably order a kit from Kurt at Cruiseroutfitters. Is that all I should need, or is there something else that I should order?

Marshall whats the order for nov dec etc. are you going to draw at this weekends meeting?
